Stand up comedians.

Post by Knots & crosses » Mon Aug 22, 2011 2:34 pm

Off to see jimmy Carr in Perth on Friday night, haven't been to a show since I left brum so really looking forward to it.

Anyone seen any decent comedians recently?

Not seen a stand up live for years but saw many of the past greats.

Monkhouse, Dawson, Mike Reid, Barrymore (before he was famous) etc etc

Never liked Carr until I actually watched one his full shows on DVD. How does he remember that many jokes? Great stuff. Just downloaded a concert from Frankie Boyle too and that is fantastic.

I always mean to go to the fringe, but never quite make it.

Should be loads about as they all go off touring normally once Edinburgh shuts down.

He's performing proper stand-up less and less, but if you ever get the chance to see him, Daniel Kitson is the best in the business IMO. Ignore the fact he was in Phoenix Nights - he is as far from the Peter Kay mould than you could ever get.

Otherwise, my recommendations would be Andrew Maxwell, Boothby Graffoe, Stewart Lee, Doug Stanhope, Demetri Martin.

If you prefer things a bit milder in the Michael MacIntyre mould (but less mind-numbing), then Sean Lock, Jon Richardson, Howard Read and Mickey Flanagan are good bets.

Caught Mike Read doing stand up in a club in Benidorm a fair few years back and he was awesome. Also saw Manning in his hayday and wasn't too bad.

If you like him have a look at Brendon Burns, another Aussie, a bit less reactionary and a bit more thought provoking, but similar vibe.

Also along those lines check out Phil Nichol and Mike Wilmot - both canadians I think, all very good

Do you believe in the resurrection? I now do...

I saw Roger De Courcey at Skegness Butlins in 1999 and he died that night. Truly terrible.

Best comedian I've seen live was Bernard Manning in '97 at Newquay. He didn't tell one racey joke and what he did tell made me nearly piss my pants. Not many comedians have made me do that in recent years.

I had to ask my wife if he was a comedian or a ventriloquist as it wasn't very clear based on his act and the audience's reaction.

Until I saw a Tommy Cooper vid on YouTube that was the first time I saw someone properly die on stage and I've seen a fair few comedians in my time thanks to habitual family summer holidays to Middleton Towers (Morecambe...) Pontins for the first week of the summer holidays.

Who was the ventriloquist who used to be on C4 years ago and the puppet was Lord (something), he wore a monacle.
