THE Professional Darts Corporation are to withdraw their support for the International Darts League and World Darts Trophy tournaments from 2008 onwards.

The two Dutch-based events have involved PDC players for the past two years and seen Raymond van Barneveld and Phil Taylor pick up tournament wins in the IDL and WDT respectively.

However, the PDC are to press ahead with their plans to create their own tournaments in Holland over the coming years to benefit all PDC players and PDPA members.

"We have stated our ambition for some time to expand the PDC on the European continent and, in particular, in Holland," said PDC Chairman Barry Hearn.

"We feel that the IDL and WDT have become tired events and the crowd levels and television audiences do not reflect what we want for our elite players.

"Therefore, we will now look to create new, vibrant tournaments and with the backing of our broadcasting partner in Holland, SBS6, create new opportunities for the best players in the sport, as well as chances for fans to see the biggest names in darts in action either live or on live television."

Hearn added: "We also plan to invest in the future of darts in Holland and around the world and creating our own new tournaments is a step to enable us to do that."

..

The PDC's have become the biggest investor in the future of darts through its financial support of events in Germany , America, Australia and South Africa in recent years, and PDC prize money for 2008 looks set to exceed €5 million.

The PDC saw the five-event North American Circuit develop successfully in 2007, and the sport is growing at an impressive rate in Australia and South Africa - where the entries for the Emperors Palace PDC SA Open last weekend were double the number from last year.

The PDC will stage it's first major televised competition in Germany later this year, the German Darts Championship, which will be shown on DSF television and follows the two Players Championship tournaments and the GDC's own circuit of events.

At least 17 countries will be represented later this year in the televised stages of the 2008 Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship, with prize money set at £605,000 in 2007/2008, £735,000 in 2008/2009 and £1 million in 2009/2010.
Hearn ran scared and withdrew the troops klaxon!!!
and the PDC were sued, lol. I have the article to post maybe later.

There were lots of new tournaments but you mean actually in Holland? The 2009 European Championship was there. They have had a Euro Tour event every year since that tour began in 2012. Struggling to think of much else from around those years.

Dutch Court Rules In Favour Of PDC
https://www.pdc.tv/news/dutch-court-rul ... our-of-pdc
21st February 2008

A DUTCH Court has ruled that the Professional Darts Corporation and broadcaster SBS6 had no agreement to take part in the International Darts League and World Darts Trophy from 2008 onwards.

Players from the Professional Darts Corporation were involved in the two Dutch-based events in 2006 and 2007.

However, the PDC withdrew its support for the tournaments in late 2007, instead opting to create a major televised tournament for its players in Holland.

IDL and WDT organisers Maximum Score BV took the PDC and SBS6 to Court in Holland in a bid to maintain PDC involvement in the events this year.

However, a Judge has ruled in favour of the PDC and SBS6, adjudicating that there was no agreement between the parties beyond 2007.

--

"We are obviously delighted that our decision has been vindicated by the Dutch legal system," said PDC Chairman Barry Hearn.

"We believed that these tournaments were tired and that it was in the best interests of our players to create our own major championship in this region.

"We will continue out plans for a European Championship, to be held in late October and early November in Holland.

"We promise Dutch darts fans a real treat when the best players in the world compete in the first professional European Championship.

"This is just the beginning of an exciting future for darts in Holland."

PDC Launch Championship League Darts
https://www.pdc.tv/news/pdc-launch-cham ... ague-darts
17th April 2008

The Professional Darts Corporation and Perform, the digital sports specialists, have launched Championship League Darts - the first ever darts tournament to be solely broadcast on and funded by internet distribution.

In a world first for darts, all aspects of the tournament, which will take place in September and October, will be optimised specifically for an internet and betting audience, with matches scheduled between 11am and 9pm to maximise both workplace and home viewing.

With a prize fund of £200,000, the winner of the tournament will receive an invitation to the PartyPoker.com Grand Slam of Darts, ITV's flagship event won last November by Phil Taylor.

---

The decision to create a bespoke internet-only darts tournament follows the success of Championship League Snooker, a Perform/Matchroom Sports event which is broadcast exclusively on the internet, together with research which shows that betting turnover on events streamed live is up to five times greater than on matches that are not streamed live.

While the PDC streamed select live matches from the Blue Square UK Open Regional Finals in 2007 and 2008 [oh?], Championship League Darts will be the first event where the whole tournament is streamed live on the internet.

---

"This is an exciting new concept in darts," said PDC Chairman Barry Hearn. "The success of the live internet streaming of Blue Square UK Open Regional Finals this year showed the appetite of darts fans to see the best players in the world in competition.

"The players, venue, staging, cameras and production will all be of the highest quality but the distribution will be a completely new phenomenon for the sport. We are delighted to be partners in such a forward thinking initiative that could help fund all sorts of new sports events around the world."

Simon Denyer, Joint CEO, Perform, said: "The Championship League Darts shows that distribution via the internet is becoming an increasingly attractive model for sports events and sports rights holders.

"We will be distributing Championship League Darts to a limited number of betting websites, and are in the process of concluding the final licensees to this ground breaking new event for the next three years.

"We will also be offering the Championship League Darts to global audiences on a pay-per-view basis through a global live sports web-TV site we will launch in the summer. With the growing global penetration of broadband connectivity, pay-per-view is becoming a sizeable market opportunity."

---

Championship League Darts Format

The games will be played on September 2-3 and 22-25 and October 21-23, with the final group on October 23.

Eight groups, each consisting of eight top players. Group One will consist of the top eight available players from the PDC Order of Merit at July 27 2008, following the Stan James World Matchplay.

Each player plays the others in the league over best-of-ten leg matches in a round-robin format. Two points go to the winner, while the men secure a point each if their match ends 5-5. Once a player reaches six legs, they have won the match and no further legs are played.

At the end of the league phase, the top four move into the play-offs (semi-finals and then final). However, those finishing seventh and eighth in the league will be eliminated and out of the competition.

The winner of each group's play-offs advances into the Winners Group in October. The losing finalist, beaten semi-finalists and players fifth and sixth in the league phase move into the next group, with players seven and eight relegated and not available for further selection.

The players who qualify for the next group will then be joined by three new players where the process is then repeated. Eventually the eight players who have won each of the groups will move into a Winners Group.

One thing is for sure, if there were more money in darts, it would be like Carlsberg, “probably the best job in the world” as I tell my tale I hope I can bring a new aspect to anyone thinking of becoming a Professional Darts Player!

So to the boring bits, the juicy bits come later.
I started playing darts when I was 19, for a local village pub, where I played Wednesday nights until I was 22!
In this short time, I won with the help of teammates, some 4’s and pair’s titles, then lucky me (well I thought so at the time) a new girlfriend meant a new pub to try out!
Over the next couple of years I met a lot more dart players in different pubs and clubs who told me about a thing called “super league” and “county!” the small village I grew up in didn’t even have a bus route so not much happened there, hence not knowing about super league isn’t as strange as it might seem now!
One particular person who I’m sure wont mind being named (Bill Delves) encouraged me to join his team, thanks Bill. From then on that was it, I was hooked! I made the Kent county team within my first year, won my first league singles title and was told about the competitions in Europe by another person who had a great impact in my early years with his positive advice, Danny Maloney (if only I had taken more advice from him rather than being “misguided” by other now known managers) there will be more about the county and super league achievements later but for now a tale from Holland

In February of 1993 at 24 I took the first step to pro darts and travelled to Holland for the Dutch open it was an eye opener for sure, at the time the PDC had not started, although it was the year they formed, so everyone who was anyone was there, I reached the quarter finals of both pairs and singles, some achievement if I do say so myself!
This could have been better in the singles and to this day I feel cheated (now the first bit of dirt comes out on my scared memories lol)

I was due to play one Phillip Taylor, before he was really famous, if memory serves I believe he had won, one world title 2 years before, beating Mike Gregory in the final (John Lowe was the current champion!).
We had been called out to our respective lanes, (I had previously beaten world no.1 Mike Gregory and someone called Ray Barneveld!)
So there I was practicing and waiting and waiting and waiting, eventually going to the control table and telling them he had not turned up, they gave him a final call and 2 minutes to turn up or the game was mine!
And just like magic there he was! He then had a throw at the board and started to complain about the lane, (which had been there all weekend with no complaints) saying it was too short! He then tried telling me we had to switch boards and play on a different lane. Even with the little experience I had, I made it clear that I would not change lanes, we were told to play on this lane and that was that!
It was then that he did something I had never seen and still have not seen it since!
The oche’s were taped down with a double-sided tape, quite strong and they had lasted all weekend, so far! He started kicking it as hard as he could, until it came up from the floor, then he moved it to where he wanted it, (about 2 inches back from its original place) told the marker he was ready and started! I was just speechless I had no idea what to do, other than play! I really cannot remember much about the game, I remember missing lots of doubles, getting more and more angry and missing more and more, I lost 3-0. Completely devastated I just wanted to walk away but Mr Taylor had not finished with me, he made a point of saying that I had done well all weekend and he just wanted me to know he would never do anything to cheat me out of the game with a huge grin on his face! Trying to be a professional I just walked away, I don’t think many people could have done that!
He got his just reward Alan Warriner beat him in the semi final, I think the oche was too big to move on the stage!

So that was my introduction to “Pro” darts, I’m not sure if Mr Taylor realises that was me, I looked totally different back then, I had hair and everything! Despite the fact he has become the worlds greatest player I cannot help wonder how many times did he cheat to get there and as much as I admire his ability I find it hard to respect his achievements!
Its off to the PDC World Championships for me this week so until the New Year that’s it, please keep looking and hopefully there will be something over the next few months that will help or maybe even make you laugh, so for now Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year 2007!

Maybe he could have dragged Taylor down, we will never know.
