The two reigning world darts champions insist they have no axe to grind after clashing at a pub in Wolverhampton.

The biggest match in darts today came to the Cleveland Arms, Stowheath Lane, last night as PDC world title holder Adrian Lewis met BDO counterpart Martin Adams to decide the 'best of the best.'

Since 1992 there have been two world championships each year, when the BDC imploded with a breakaway faction initially called the WDC, changing name to the PDC in the late 1990s.

The two are prohibited to meet in competitive events and have been since the split but last night, in a relatively light hearted exhibition, saw their two current leading lights go head to-head.

Lewis took the lead and rarely looked back, running out a 13-10 winner with five 180s to one, scoring an average of 86 to Adams' 84.

Two great players duelled for the glass vase on the night, presented by Wolverhampton's Wayne Jones, but were adamant the sport, whatever camp your tent is in, comes first.

Lewis said: "I just enjoyed the moment but everyone expects the PDC player to win, so there's a lot more pressure on me.

"We had a great crack, me and Martin are great mates and everyone says to me 'do you hate the BDO?' It's a load of rubbish.

"I used to play county darts with a lot of those players, so why would I turn my back on them because I have joined another organisation?

"All we want to do is play darts."

Adams has been voted on to the board of the BDO - the lesser drawing power of the two - after a shake-up of the organisation's governing body.

He said: "Personally, to us, no one ever fell out over it. There's no bridges to build, in my view, because all of the players get on.

"No one can predict the future but I believe the BDO and the PDC will continue to go their own separate ways. I can't see any change to that.

"For the people that love darts, they will want to see as much of it as they can on TV.

"It doesn't matter who is playing."

ROCKET Ronnie Baxter insists he will take it one step at a time as he attempts to win his first major tournament at the Skol World Championship in Purfleet.

Baxter has been the tournament's form player following two impressive victories over Kevin Painter and Dennis Smith at the Circus Tavern.

He topped the averages with 99.39 in the 4-2 first-round win over Painter before blitzing fifth seed Smith 6-1 in just over an hour.

But Baxter refuses to look too far ahead and said: "You have got to look at every round as it stands and beat the next person in front of you.

"It's no good looking towards the final - you have got to beat the rest before you get there.

"I played well on the 28th but I was a bit mediocre with my scoring against Dennis. In the end my finishing pulled me through.

"As long as I can put it together in the next two days I should be okay. But we won't know until on the day - every day is another battle."

Peter Manley booked his last-eight spot with an epic 6-5 win over veteran John Lowe, but Baxter added:"He is just another player I have got to beat."

Meanwhile, Richie Burnett believes he is capable of playing a lot better despite clinching a quarter-final place.

'The Prince of Wales' was pushed all the way by Denis Ovens before he eventually prevailed 6-4.

He said: "You will never win a tournament through talent alone. You have got to have nerves, passion, concentration and many other things.

"And I'' pleased that I have these, even if I am not playing fluently at the moment"

Burnett will now face in-form Colin Lloyd, who defeated World Grand Prix champion Alan Warriner in the second round.

THE Professional Darts Corporation will move from a ranking points system to an Order of Merit from 2007, and the current 2005 Order of Merit is now available to view online.

The Order of Merit will include prize money won in every PDC ranked event, and will succeed the current system following the 2007 Ladbrokes.com World Championship.

The current Order of Merit has been produced since the 2005 World Championship ended, beginning with the Budweiser UK Open North-East Regional Final in January.

Victories in the Budweiser UK Open finals and the Las Vegas Desert Classic have helped Phil Taylor to the top spot as the current leading earner.

Colin Lloyd, who picked up £25,000 for his victory in the Stan James World Matchplay recently, is in second place.

UK Open finalist Mark Walsh is sat in third place, just ahead of another form player from the circuit, Ronnie Baxter, and John Part, who has reached the latter stages at all three major tournaments so far this year.

Chris Mason, James Wade and Adrian Lewis are three players who are currently sat outside the top 24 in the world rankings but have performed well throughout 2005.

Newcomers Colin Osborne and Jimmy Mann would be ranked 24 and 26 respectively under the new system in their debut years, while Americans Ray Carver and John Kuczynski would also be inside the top 50.

Tried looking. The Archived site from 2005 is a mess. Dartsdatabase wasn't around in 2005.
