Re: Darts articles in the Media thread
The pdc crowd is without doubt the worst in sport
Wouldn't be tolerated anywhere else.
Why is darts different?

You could have said that in the first place. 9 seconds of my life I won't get back but I don't mind, it's ok.

Gary Newbon: I hit the bull's eye to make darts a telly hit
https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/ ... e-25871508
---
During our conversation he mentioned that another client, Butlin’s Holidays, were seeking exposure on TV.
I told him about my darts plans with the aim of the British Darts Organisation bringing the world’s top 16 players to Birmingham for two days and I would make 15 half-hour, recorded TV shows. I was looking for Butlin’s to pay around £20,000 to cover all the costs apart from our coverage and production.
The problem was he only had two hours to send a confirmation fax which he eventually did with ten minutes to spare and so the Butlin’s Grand Masters was born.
I needed a front so I approached a good friend with Birmingham City, Dave Hadley, who is now 87 and very much kicking in Henley in Arden. Sadly, his partner on these ventures, Ian Townsend, passed away two years ago.
It worked like a treat. In an all-England 1977 final John Lowe beat a young Eric Bristow 5-4 at Sutton Town Hall. The competition was then moved to the Swan at Yardley, which at the time was the largest pub in Europe.
Leighton Rees, of Wales, beat Lowe in the next final before England’s Bobby George was champion in 1979 and ‘80. There were some great characters including Scotland’s Jocky Wilson.
Cigarettes, beer and pot bellies were very much the order of the day on the oche.

"But unlike the scripted characters churned out by TV writers’ rooms, the men and women on the Ally Pally stage are beautifully three-dimensional, their skill matched only by their raw vulnerability."

If the PDC think that the crowd at Ally pally are okay. Why not let the players have a free reign giving it back. I would love it if a player started abusing the fans and giving the wanker sign.

The players would get a massive fine and possible suspension. Would be interesting and newsworthy if a player like Price walked off mid match and refused to return whilst live on sky sportsHalloweenJack wrote: ↑Thu Jan 19, 2023 11:24 pm If the PDC think that the crowd at Ally pally are okay. Wondering if Nicho went a tad over the top on Veenstra...
https://www.sportinglife.com/darts/news ... air/206695
With all due respect to everyone else who came through Q School, most eyes will be on Richard Veenstra because he really is a proper player and a threat for titles.
He has so much talent and an incredible mentality that nobody will ruffle. He’s fast, effective, dangerous and the one I’ll be watching closest over the next six months.
Flyers probably should have won at the Lakeside during his time in the BDO/WDF system – because he was always one of the best players on paper in his five appearances and although his best run was a semi-final, he did win plenty of other big titles.
He could have a career very similar to Gary Anderson, who also failed to land the biggest prize in the BDO before he finally moved to the PDC.
Like Anderson – and other players who found another level after switching – I think Richard will love the structure of PDC events and how you don’t have to wait a few hours for a match! This will play to his strengths. He has a fast style so expect him to challenge in the early Players Championship events this season and put himself in the qualification picture for several majors in his debut year.
This is the right time for Veenstra to make his name after years of treating darts as a ‘hobby’ away from his normal job.
He’ll have plenty of friends in the room and won’t be star struck whatsoever.
