Nicknames

Thought about this after Skweezit posted an article by the ODC where he said he liked the name 'Frosty the throw man'. Am I alone in thinking that is just awful? I would cringe if it was me.
Seems to me it's something every high level dart player simply must have, it's almost as important as talent. I know Gary Anderson said he'd rather just be known by his name, as did James Wade. A few players seem to have half got away with it, such as Barney and Chizzy.

So am I alone in thinking this way, or do you all dream of the day you get one (assuredly coupled with your own walk-on music)?

Its all part of the sports entertainment business. Thats not a joke, this is fact, any player going to be given front of house coverage by sky must be marketable, talent is important, marketability is up there along side of it......

Like on tv, players cant wear the same colour shirt, players cant have the same colour flights, players cant use black points in there darts, like all this makes a difference to the result or outcome of the game.

Following on from Dicie Mark Walsh made the point on the entertainment side of the game on Sky and Justin Irwin's podcast. The names are massively hyped whilst the solid players are largely ignored because they don't have a gimmick.

Yes I see that Dicie, I just think it's crap. Not just Sky either. I see after Anderson complained about not being able to use his black points on Sky that he is now using them. Originally I spied they were black and silver, two-tone, so the silver bit showed. Recently it looks like they are all black. It's a silly rule, you can see the points just as well on tv.
Same colour flights? Are you kidding me? Ffs.

Walshie dont have a ring to it, he isnt out there, he isnt in ur face..... But yet he was in the top 10 in the world and cud not get an interview after a tv victory.

many players are like this, they dont have a marketing value to sky/pdc/hearn

AWL, manley, mace all made back pages of the sun and few more papers, was it for there ability, was it fuck, it was for the hype, them getting stuck into taylor, pdc/sky loved it, they even started hyping painter till he became an in your pocket boy to feel. Which is a shame cause iv become a fan of painter.

Just take 1 look at feel being introduced to any game of sky, and its

Philllllll, the powerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr taylorrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, all the enphisis is on the power....

Very true Dicie, and to a lesser extent BBC coverage is all about Adams. I understand why because they're still the biggest names on each side of the divide.

What really pisses me off with Sky is even when Taylor's been knocked out it appears to be all about him.

I think a lot of that is Sid's inabity to stop mentioning him, MH. Every game there's some comparison to a 'world record avg' or some such.

BBC does seem to hinge on Adams in the same way, yet the player they got dressed up for last time was Hankey.

Yes, Sid is totally obsessed with Taylor and getting worse. I remember cringing when the BBC did their Hankey love in

bbc/bdo marketing has an even bigger problem than sky re taylor when adams/hankey retire as the new players all up and leave. where will the focus be then? at least the pdc has options of who to promote.

The Tour Card may inadvertantly have done the BBC/BDO a favour in the long run

Indeed, I think it will be a bit of both. Lakeside semi finalists will still be offered a Tour Card but how many will accept?

the gsod is a double edged sword for hearn, it has in the past brought players over, but the likes of waites etc are happy to use it as a cash cow and stay in the bdo. without that financial lifeline once a year now would waites make the switch i wonder?

I don't blame players that are happy in the BDO system playing in GSoD, taking whatever cash they win and going back. It's bunce and a good experience.

neither do i but it must annoy hearn, the purpose of gsod was in some part at least to destabalise the bdo and tempt players accross the divide i imagine.

Waites and his cash cow. I remember his mrs saying how he was happy to get the cash once a year. Thought that was a huge assumption.

Waites better hope he doesn't get pumped first round then.

Don't be surprised if he gets a horrible group.

Luke the Nuke - will it stick? If he loses form at some point, could it change to the Puke?
