Not trying to stir shit but English peoples level of knowledge of Irish history is shockingly brutal.
History as a subject in Britain is poorly taught in the whole., where schools tend to concentrate on just the main british issues without delving into the affairs of neighbouring countries showing its comparison.

In Ireland, along with learning our own history , english history was taught as much if not more than our own due to the knock on effect and what with ireland being under its thumb for over 800 years.

Even my own wife who grew up in england and went to school and college there, has only basic history, that a 14 year old in Ireland would have.

guess I find myself more passionate about these things as I always loved history, as well as geography.
Always did very well in them in school, but like everything in life you tend to be better at things you like or are interested in.

Always had a huge interest in the english civil war(s) and remember when I was working in the adult shops and people were buying porn , they were amazed i spent my time reading history books rather than watching porn.

I like history myself Gaz, and got a top pass in Geography at school. Have a read of "Hitler, The Nemisis", will take a while but it's worth it

It's about 1,200 pages and small print Gaz, once I got past the first 200 I couldn't put it down. Another good but very disturbing read is "A Boy Called It", and the two follow up books.

I don't do the fiction stuff either

Story of Ireland

I shall watch this. The only way I learn history is via tv as I can't get into books about it. Dropped the subject at school as I couldn't see the point in doing it, a decision I still stand by. It's a waste subject imo, like art or drama.

Agree with you Sat on Art and Drama ,as well as a heap of other useless subjects, but I firmly believe history is something that should be mandatory in schools like it is in ireland.

Even nowdays a deep understanding of news and political events be it in the old former yugoslavia, formation of british political parties etc..history is essential is gaining insight in to how things have got to the point they are at now

I appreciate that view, but I don't agree with it.
People should choose if they want to know. I don't think I am bothered much as to why things are the way they are now, maybe I should be (hard won freedoms and all that) but I feel so removed from all that it may as well be a fictional story.

I respect your opinion Sat and thats your choice as an adult, however I do think kids should have that instilled at school.
Doing what we want is one thing as an adult but we should make it a priority the children get the best of education

I think that as history formed the present we live in and will be instrumental in the future the kids should have at least a basic grounding in the subject.

Of course they should get the best education. I take it they still have to choose subjects though? I just can't see the value of being FORCED into studying history, when you have the rest of your life to learn about that if you wish. About as relevant to most people as RE and media studies.
Obviously it should be available as an option, but it should also be possible to opt out.

The problem is Sat if kids are allowed to study what they like they would learn fuckall of use.

Unless they added mtv, playstation and xbox to the curriculum there would be nothing learned.
Had I my way i would have skipped Irish , beginners french,, english prose, woodwork etc

Think my problem is simply with schools. I had a hellish time with my options. I took all the subjects they wanted me to, but I also wanted to do typing, as a fall back for a job. All I got was 'no, that's for the thick kids, do RE or history'. WTF? RE? That's really going to enhance my career opportunities isn't it.

Fuck I hated school.
