Don’t get me wrong, it is a great episode but people always says it’s the #1 episode, when there are better ones.

The two I can name off the top of my head both coincidently heavily involve Cartman and Butters.

The ending of the episode where Cartman impersonates Butters over the phone to his parents always made me chuckle.

The criticism I've read against that episode is that it's too dark, but I just found it hilarious.

The Cartman character at its best.

Nothing is too dark for South Park.
Maybe back when the episode aired in 2001.

And they literally had a kid die of cancer in “Stanley’s Cup”, pretty dark and sick.

I watched the episode at the time. IIRC it was shown on Sky One in the UK. Channel 4 did have the rights to earlier seasons, but stopped showing it before season 5.

I found it funny at the time and just as funny when I re-watched it years later. That was something that stood out when I re-watched early to mid 2000s South Park and 1990s Simpsons in my 20s and 30s. The episodes had mostly aged well.

Gary Conduit and? (Conduit being one of the very few Parker and Stone felt bad for mocking)
Gary Condit and the Ramseys are both innocent. From Wikipedia.

"In a 2011 interview, South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone stated that they regretted how Condit and the Ramseys were portrayed in the episode."

Aye, Parker and Stone will hold their hands up when they get something demonstrably wrong.

Climate change being another example.

The very first episode of South Park I saw was “Cripple Fight” on Channel 4.
Didn’t know Sky One showed episodes, just thought it was Comedy Central after Channel 4.

I think “Stanley’s Cup” is considered one of the worst episodes. Possibly due to the very end scene of the kid dying. 😅

The ManBearPig episode is still hilarious, despite them issuing a backhanded apology to Al Gore.

Cartman shitting out the treasure at the end will never not be funny.

It mush have been shown on Channel 4 at a later date then.

By the mid-2000s it was indeed shown on Paramount IIRC, which was the forerunner to Comedy Central in the UK.

It was most likely a paedo who was hanging around the Beauty pageants. I think it's actually likely he broke into the house when they were out on Christmas night and wrote the ransom letter, and probably waited in the basement for them to come home and go to bed.

It was my first year of college in 2008 when I started watching the show religiously.

I only read about all the controversy around then.
I think he died in 2008 as well?

But I liked Chef as a character but wasn’t exactly upset that he’d never return.

I’ll have to refresh my memory of the case.
South Park is the only reason I know of it and read up about it in the first place.

Same with Conduit.

Aye, Hayes died in August of 2008.

In early 2006, Hayes' entourage apparently sent a letter to Comedy Central in Hayes' name requesting for him to be released from his contract. They weren't happy with how the show presented scientology. Their request was presumably granted.

The Chef character was an after-thought as the series progressed imo. He was more relevant to the show in its early seasons, which haven't aged especially well imo.
