They tried it with Rikishi and that failed miserably

A heel Eddie perhaps?
Eddie had substance abuse issues in 2001, so probably not him.

Jericho or Benoit would have perhaps been the best options.

Sadly, Brock was some way off from debuting, otherwise he would have been perfect.

I did read the other day that Eddie had major problems around then
But in a perfect world, I’d have liked to have seen Eddie in that spot

Not sure I’d buy Benoit as a solid heel
His promos would have let him down massively

Austin and Benoit had great chemistry in the ring. Their bouts in May 01 are some of the best TV matches I've seen.

Perhaps they could have had Vince or someone else as Benoit's mouthpiece.

Benoit worked well with Rock the prior year, where he had Shane as a mouthpiece. They headlined the July PPV, which did very good business, better than Austin and Taker had managed the previous year.

Who were/are your favourites Oche?
I don't think i actually answered this. Sorry Senna.

I started watching wrestling when i was in Primary School when i got Sky Television in 1991. My favourite was British Bulldog and the Legion of Doom. My dad took me and my brother to watch the wrestling in 1992-93, Missed out on tickets for Summerslam 1992, I loved the Royal Rumble of that year when Ric Flair won it .By 1995 i actually stopped watching as it was losing it way & i couldn't understand why Shawn Michaels was the best wrestler they had (I do now) so in Secondary School i missed the start of the attitude era. My youngest brother started watching wrestling around 2000 & my mate was a big Steve Austin fan. So i watched it then and my brother grew out of it by 2005. Since then i have a look around what's going on & read up on the attitude era etc. As for WCW i remember watching it on Saturday afternoons on ITV before the football started and thinking that these were worse then WWF and not really giving a toss about it and was surprised that Hulk Hogan went there in 1994.

I know you asked a simple question lol

Ha, I remember watching WCW on ITV. It was shown around 1994 and 1995 when I was 7 or 8. I recall watching footage of the Yeti's debut and a wrestler who came out with a rabbit (which I found out years later was David Sullivan)

IIRC it was shown on ITV Central, which out of the TVs in my house only my brother's TV received.

I remember WCW being shown on Channel 5.

WCW Worldwide.

Started in mid-1999 and ran until WCW's demise in early 2001.

I stopped watching it at some point in 2000. It was pretty terrible.

It was highlights from Nitro, Thunder and WCW Saturday Night IIRC.

So you'd get stuff like Jim Duggan vs Regal from Saturday Night then Hogan vs Flair from Nitro.

Again, it was dire :)

They were setting record attendance figures in late 1998 with Goldberg as champion, but by mid 1999 they were struggling big time. I'm not sure when exactly their TV shows became unwatchable, but it certainly was by the time Worldwide started to air on Channel 5.

Vince Russo not having to have Vince McMahon’s approval for storylines was a big killer

Russo style wrestling also wasn't what WCW's core audience wanted to see.

Truth be told, Austin vs McMahon was far more important to WWF's boom period than anything Russo booked on the undercard. I've long believed that if Austin had been unable to return from his neck injury in late 1997 that WWF's boom period would have never occurred, even with Russo and co booking. So no chance his booking was going to turn around WCW in 1999.

it would be interesting to see an alternate universe where WCW won the Monday Night Wars and the WWF was the one that went out of business

I wonder if WCW would still be going now?

I think WCW would have imploded eventually, even if the WWF's boom didn't occur and their business declined to the point where they went under. I suspect that Bischoff and co would have carried on booking the same acts in prominent spots to even decreasing returns (Hogan, NWO, etc). I think they would have always fumbled with Goldberg' at some point too.

That said, while Jamie Kellner (CEO of Turner Broadcasting) didn't want WCW shows shown on Time Warner stations, and Brad Siegal (Turner Executive in charge of WCW) also wanted Time Warner to get rid of it by 2000, the story goes that Vince and a former Turner executive close to Siegal conspired to ensure WCW shows were cancelled on Turner networks and for the promotion to be sold to Vince for a relatively small sum. There were apparently higher bidders (Bischoff) who would have kept the company up and running on other networks into the 2000s, at least for a while -https://www.ewrestlingnews.com/editoria ... esponsible.

So I guess it's possible had that WCW won the war, and Vince also gone under, that WCW would still be around today with different owners.
