Not until 2002, really.

1994-1997 had the World Championship, World Matchplay and World Pairs
1998-2001 had the World Championship, World Matchplay and World Grand Prix

2002 saw the Las Vegas Desert Classic introduced
2003 saw the start of the UK Open
2005 saw the start of the Premier League

Then came the Barney switch from BDO to PDC in 2006.

They did, in Rochester. The first two World Grand Prixs were there, in 1998 and 1999.

And the World Grand Prix 1999 had a unique format which is used by Cricket and some other sports nowadays

Match 1: Player A v Player B
Match 2: Player C v Player D
Match 3: Winner of match 1 v Winner of Match 2 (winner goes into quarter finals)
Match 4: Loser of match 1 v Loser of Match 2
Match 5: Winner of match 4 v Loser of Match 3 (winner goes into quarter finals)

Yes they use it in the quarter finals, so its 10 games rather than 5, but exactly the same. Win twice and you move on, lose twice and you are out, win once plus lose once and you get a final chance.

If that is Taylor's back then this is very probably a pic of the first final in 98.

Only 1.5 players were making a living but there was something about squalor and intimacy which was the best environment for darts. Is my mushroom showing? Sorry.
