Tommy Cox was spot on with his comments about the BDO trying to put the WDC out of business, that the BDO would lose in the end and that the tobacco sponsorship was on borrowed time. Without the Dutch boom that Raymond van Barneveld enabled from 1998, the BDO would have suffered financially a lot earlier than they did.

The end of that article is a laugh. The journo prefers the BDO and says "it's only a game of darts, lads" which is the sort of amateur thinking that top level professional darts should never be about, and which the WDC/PDC was working to change.
