Olly Croft was aiming to bankrupt the WDC through BDO bans on WDC players and through forcing the WDC into prolonged legal proceedings if they wanted those bans overturned. Croft nearly succeeded. It took John Raby's money to largely stop the WDC going bust, along with most WDC players putting money in too.

In 1997, the WDC agreed to concede to the BDO's demand in court that the WDC change their name and cease being a "governing body" in return for having the ban lifted on WDC players playing in BDO tournaments, county darts and exhibitions. Getting the ban lifted was the WDC's motivation for the court case. Perhaps Croft was also counting on the WDC being as stubborn as he was in court by continuing to fight to be a "governing body" instead of just dropping it. Some WDC people wanted to sue for loss of earnings, but it wasn't done, such was the legal fatigue at the time and the desire to get on with growing the newly named PDC.

This is what I remember: (the match might be on you tube...)

The match was played at Wembley Arena, in a side room.
A bit like the Indigo room in size, at the huge O2 arena.

An all seated theatre like setting with seats rising up the isles. A huge clock to the right of the stage ready to count down 1 hour. Taylor walked on stage like a man possessed and after blood. He hammered Barney in the 1st leg scoring wise, missed doubles as Headshaker plodded on and stole it.

Taylor was clearly raging but soon got into his stride as the match became totally one sided with maybe 20 mins to go making the event a bit of a farce. A strange event with a good pay day for both. Walked past the Golden Girl's car blazened with Trina Gulliver - BDO Women's World Darts Champion. I left her a note under her wiper blade.

I still have the programme somewhere.
