Raymond van Barneveld, and even more so Vincent van der Voort, can really sulk when things go wrong. A lot of Dutch are notorious for falling out over silly things, and it's the old Calvinist culture of "always be true to yourself" as well as the sense of destiny mindset that Barney always seems to have during big events of his career.
So I assume their friendship had peaks and troughs.
Yeah, I thought so. Like I said before, Barney might sulk for a time, but he tends to get over it as well after a while.ChrisW wrote: ↑Thu Mar 14, 2024 8:09 pmSitting together happily tonight.sennafan24 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 14, 2024 5:24 pmStompe and Barney were close friends at one point IIRC.PT13 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 14, 2024 5:18 pm Co Stompe has a less serious sense of humour compared to a lot of Dutch players. There was a segment on Sky years ago where they asked some players whether money or trophies mattered more to them.PT13 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 14, 2024 5:41 pm+1. Vincent seems to dislike Co a lot more. Barney might sulk for a period, but then he's usually fine. Barney did have a long term rivalry with Fordham, which Fordham detailed in his autobiography, but most players have a good or a hot-cold thing with Barney. A lot of players are just baffled by Barney's odd sulky attitude at times on the oche, where he didn't seem to be enjoying playing darts even. I think I understand Barney's attitude, which is admittedly very complex. Barney plays to be the best and to win the biggest tournaments, and he has seldom done that from 2008 onwards (only 2 TV events won from 2008 onwards, i.e. the 2012 Grand Slam and the 2014 Premier League), yet Barney also has that Calvinist sense of destiny, so he believes that by playing on he will inevitably get some more big moments in his career and the ultimate would be another World Championship.sennafan24 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 14, 2024 5:24 pmStompe and Barney were close friends at one point IIRC.PT13 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 14, 2024 5:18 pm Co Stompe has a less serious sense of humour compared to a lot of Dutch players. Vincent said the early 2000s was when Barney and Co didn't get on. That's when Barney wasn't winning Embassy titles at Lakeside, so he would be sensitive to certain senses of humour.

Barney was one of the few who said trophies IIRC.
Yes, that was at the 2017 Champions League of Darts on the BBC, IIRC. Taylor laughed when asked and said "cheque". He later said that trophies take up space, and that the knowledge of doing your job properly by winning a tournament and collecting the money was more important than any trophy.sennafan24 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 14, 2024 8:23 pmThere was a segment on Sky years ago where they asked some players whether money or trophies mattered more to them.PT13 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 14, 2024 5:41 pm+1. Comparing the Belgian Decker slap to the ASN slap. One not related to PDC one was. Why the huge difference in consequences?
