In reality, he was far better than anyone in the world at the time.

Hankey wasn't a much stronger opponent than Priestley, if at all.

Hankey vs Baxter was an easy final for Hankey he didnt have to play that well to win 6-0. There was a 27 dart first leg as well. Hankey's average was around 96 after that and in 2nd gear. Taylor vs Hankey in 2000 would have been one hell of a match.

You could also say that Taylor was coasting in the 2000 PDC final then.

For the final time, Taylor was regularly averaged in the ballpark of 103-105 during the 2000 PDC Worlds. Averages that Hankey didn't come close to touching throughout the 2000 BDO Worlds. Hankey's highest average was 98 against Mason, a game where you can't say he was coasting in 2nd gear.

Barney, who is billed as the best post-split BDO player, faced Taylor 10 times between 1999 and 2005 in cross-code events. Taylor won 8, Barney won 2. Taylor's head to head record against other top BDO players in cross-code events during that timeframe is also very much in his favour. Walton never beat him, David never beat him, Fordham never beat him. Adams beat him once in 1999, but was soundly beaten in their 2 TV meetings. Taylor also beat Hankey in 2005.

Sure, there is a "chance" that Hankey would have beaten Taylor in 2000, but it's a very small one.

2005 isn't 2000.

Also the bit i highlighted was a problem for Taylor until Barneveld came along.

So Taylor had more in reserve in case someone such as Hankey pushed him close? Good to know.

And coasting clearly wasn't that much of an issue for Taylor if he was dominating the BDO's best players including Barney in cross-code events and dominating the PDC TV events with massive averages.

Yet again, you haven't explained why Hankey's usual 90-95 averages in 2000 would have troubled Taylor who was regularly averaging over the ton mark.
