I think its down to the fact Potter has said he will only fund the event to the same extent as usual if a decent broadcaster is found, and they are running around try to find TV.

That's probably more likely in fairness.
As soon as Bob dies the gig is over, they do need to cut the apron springs.

I said when the BBC binned it that the BDO need to closely interrogate every aspect of their World Pro to make it into a TV show worth paying for.

Happily for them, Channel 4 came along, with willingness and funds to preserve it whole for another 2 editions.

If that's now ended, then it's back to my point. If, say, Channel 5 would give it the full works over a long weekend only, featuring 8 men and 4 women with seeds given byes to that stage, then it's something to consider. Stream the earlier rounds on Youtube or something.

Blasphemy but lugging this old thing around the networks as a huge 9-day slow-burner only could be a major stumbling point.

Fair point about the length being a factor. Or, keep it as it is and only the final 2 days get shown live, but obviously you could end up with 4 jobbers in the semis.

I daresay there'll be even less TV interest in the event if it gets turned into a 3-day affair or whatever. The core problem is that BDO players just aren't household names anymore. The PDC can get away with sticking a random World Series weekend event on TV, but the Lakeside only works anymore because the 9-day duration allows the viewers to build up at least a minimum of familiarity with the players involved. Put only the last 8 on TV or reduce the event to 8 players altogether, and you're basically trying to flog the same thing the EDO is putting out when it's buying TV time for its opens. And we know how well that has been working. There's no way a "world championship" tournament at that level would be worth anywhere near the current prize fund.

As I never get tired of pointing out, if that's the way things are headed they might as well scrap the whole thing, save £300k+, and try to do something TV-worthy with the Masters instead.

Most of their viewers are still mystified that Eric Bristow , John Lowe and Jocky Wilson were not in the line up at Lakeside last year.

People continue to be ignored on the Lakeside Darts FB page. Patricia Mitchell seems particularly narked.

But the most recent post is this random gem...

Should someone call Lakeside and ask the right questions it appears Uncle Des has been cancelling the meetings that were due to happen. There's now a possible meeting Either Monday or Tuesday and still no confirmation the event will happen.
When you actually feel anger over a place like this it's time to get a life

The number of people asking on the Lakeside Darts FB page seems to be going up and up. Lots of people having the piss taken out of them by the wall of silence on there.
