Jocky Wilson Said

Post by cidermaster » Thu May 09, 2019 12:19 am

Next Wednesday on BBC 1 Scotland an hour long documentary on the legend of Darts Jocky Wilson called simply ‘Jocky Wilson ‘ said
Rare footage and interviews of him,his rivals and friends
Sounds good to me and will shortly be available on the BBC I Player after it is shown.

Did anybody else watch this? I thought it was good but also a little sad. A little bit of nostalgia is always good!

Just watched it.
I had no idea how hard the media tried to crucify him :(

Yes, just seemed an easy target. Didn't help he over compensated for his shyness & played up to stereotypical dart player image.

Sid Waddell did get in to see Jocky Wilson in Kirkcaldy after Jocky became a self-enforced recluse. Sid mentions it in his book "Bellies and Bullseyes". Jocky had a fag in his hand, was completely sober, said hi to Sid like he had seen him yesterday, invited him in, Malvina was out. Sid said that Jocky was in a small flat with just one bedroom, a bathroom, a table, a couple of chairs, one settee and a TV (including Sky). There was also a picture of Jocky with the 1982 Embassy World Championship trophy on the top of the TV. Sid said there was a flicker of the old Jocky, but he was super cautious when Sid suggested doing a book with him in the future.

Sid must have caught Jocky on a good day, because Jocky told others from the darts world to F off when they called, or Malvina told them that he never gives interviews and has left his old life behind. Then again, Jocky, Sid and Bobby George were very close for a long time in the 1980s. The story in Sid's book of Jocky hitch-hiking across a desert in the US had me in stitches.

From Sid Waddell's 2007 book "Bellies and Bullseyes: The Outrageous True Story of Darts", the chapter "Jocky Wilson Said", starting on page 96 of the hardcover version of the book:

Deleted, due to ungrateful whinging posters.
