Re: Rogg's Twatter Watch
If they are trying to defend the 'Night out at Butlins' vibe of the BDO then they are even more off their fucking heads. The competition has always been the driving factor of darts, not getting teary eyed about the sound of pint glasses clanking in some shithole in Surrey.

My appraisal of the BDO World Championships so far. It’s a big deal playing at the Lakeside, don’t knock it. The women’s event is more intriguing than the men’s...because Glen Durrant is the best by far. The counting is poor.
ian mcfarlane @ifmcf
You say that but he certainly likes to try to lose. Darts has been dominated for decades by the same players , it's the way of individual sports. Q school would suit Glenn I think, he's used to pacing himself through massive fields.

Massive fields of pub standard players and protective seeding positions for the few who are better than that, yeah. The overall quality of the Q School field will be low, but still vastly superior to something like the British Open.

Warren Allsworth @warrenallsworth
The biggest problem with this years BDO Worlds is depth of field. Top guys playing well. But some of the averages being posted are sub standard unfortunately. Unlike PDC which has strength in depth to support field size can't help but think reverting back to 32 improves Lakeside
Oche Balboa @OcheBalboa1
Reynolds would still qualify
Warren Allsworth @warrenallsworth 4m
Not a criticism of a particular player. Just an observation. I've genuinely been a little surprised (and disappointed) with some of the performances this year - standard has been mixed to put it politely. Full credit to Dean doing the interview afterwards - that takes some balls
Someone has normally said by now that as a spectacle it would at its least catastrophic as a 16-player event over a long weekend. Falling to 8 from next year. Then keep going.

You have to wonder what's going to happen from now on given the BDO restrictions on Q-School no longer apply.

Keep halving the field every year until there's only 1 player left and burn him in a gigantic wicker mushroom.Fiss Plaps wrote: ↑Wed Jan 09, 2019 10:59 pmYou have to wonder what's going to happen from now on given the BDO restrictions on Q-School no longer apply.
Nothing will change for the next two editions at least, for sure. It will get worse.

Re: Rogg's Twatter Watch
As ever, the core problem remains that the BDO tour just isn't very attractive the way it's set up. Thanks to Dartconnect, we know that nearly 50 players managed to average 85+ on the Challenge Tour for the season. That's almost certainly more depth than you can find on the BDO circuit these days, which struggles just to assemble 50 touring players altogether, and with the bottom end of that crowd probably no better than 75-odd Superleague standard. So, halfway decent players without a PDC tour card are out there in a fairly sizable number, but they're not playing BDO. And as long as the circuit requires players to traipse around European backwaters for a full 15-20 weekends in a year to get anywhere in the rankings, that's not gonna change.
Des might be hoping that removing the restrictions is gonna result in more player movement in both directions, but with the status quo on the BDO tour it's not gonna happen. The whole thing would need to be done completely different, probably as separate regional tours to attract players who can only spare 6 or 8 weekends of limited travel for the BDO.

Re: Rogg's Twatter Watch
The BDO still calls Lakeside "World Professional", when the reality is that the BDO circuit is the amateur circuit and has been since the split. Admittedly that amateur circuit was once a lot stronger for a few reasons resulting from the aftermath of the split and the Barney/Netherlands boom, but those days of BDO relative strength are long gone. As recently as 10 years ago, they had Anderson, Webster and Whitlock playing there.
I just don't get what they think they're accomplishing by continuing with the charade of "World Professional" these days. Olly Croft isn't even there anymore in the BDO corridors of power, is he? Or is he still at the WDF?
It will be interesting to see what happens from now on with the different dynamic of BDO players being able to play at Q School without having to take a risk of giving up their next year in the BDO beforehand. So someone like Glen Durrant can now play Q School, and if he fails to get a tour card he can go back to what he's always known in the BDO, whereas with a card he can obviously move on into the PDC. The end of the BDO restrictions on Q School, in itself, might not have that much difference, because I doubt many of the Lakeside players would get a card anyway.
I wonder how much longer Lakeside can continue like it has been in recent years?

He loves what he does, so the criticism isn't warranted
