I wake up to check what happened, and all of a sudden Rapid Ricky Evans has basically secured his place, from being miles away not long ago. Fair play to him, wildly inconsistent so I doubt he'll do a de Zwaan, but if he turns up, you can guarantee that nobody will want to play him first round!

The scenario for the weekend then.

Burton DeWitt @bsd987
Jeffrey de Zwaan's failure to qualify for Riesa means that Steve Lennon has clinched a debut appearance in the World Grand Prix in Dublin. 21 players mathematically alive for 6 spots.

De Zwaan and Noppy qualify. 8-) Both won a card in January. Belting.
Evans and Payne seem to have got in from absolutely nowhere.

Burton DeWitt @bsd987
Jeffrey de Zwaan and Danny Noppert have clinched debut appearances in the World Grand Prix.
Ron Meulenkamp will do likewise unless either James Richardson or Ryan Searle win the International Darts Open title tonight.

If by some chance Searle or Richardson get in at his expense they will clearly deserve it.
Hope not mind.

Shudder. It'll be great to have all the new names in Dubberlin. Funny format and only the 8 seeds there too, so extra possibilities of the draw opening up.

Certainly don't see gurney defending it.

An interesting point I noticed is that Klaasen was seeded in the first 6 Euro Tours and only won one game, which is a dismal record really. So he lost £5000 only due to the new PDC rule which means he can't keep his 1st round money if he loses a seed. If it wasn't for that, he would have easily qualified for the Grand Prix and the European Champiosnhips

Good. Would be a farce if he qualified on the merits of just losing games.

Beaton appears to do that every year and still manages it.
2020 World Grand Prix Lucky Dip winner!
2x 2019 Q-School Lucky Dip winner!

Both as valuable as the Lakeside piss pot!

Nine debutants. In darts terms they're mostly all yoof. Schindler ended up pretty close.

Burton DeWitt @bsd987
The field is set for the World Grand Prix. Ron Meulenkamp gets into the last ProTour spot, as 9 of the 16 ProTour qualifiers (Clayton, Hopp, Wattimena, Lennon, Evans, Payne, de Zwaan, Noppert, Meulenkamp) will be making their World Grand Prix debuts.

Draw 'in the week' apparently. That's that cleared up to the usual professional standard.

Correct. Winning matches on TV is another matter but the path that far is well beaten now.

From 11th to 32nd in the pro tour column, there are maybe only 4 players older than mid-30s - VdvdDVd, Thornton, Dolan and Mansell.

One of many talking points for this tournament. The pressure for sure is on Barney at this tail end of the season....

Doing a Lakeside in January then a Matchplay and/or Grand Prix in the same year..

Is Noppert the first player since Bunting to achieve this or have I forgotten about some dull cunt/s?

Nope. Only qualified for the UK Open in his maiden year.

In fact he didn't even qualify for Ally Pally at the end of it.
