An exception is the 1978 BDO world championship which was played in legs. Lowe struggled in leg play in 1978, playing better and winning it in 1979 when it switched to set play. Rees was whitewashed in the final, he suffered badly under set play and the introduction of set play coincided with his decline. In 1978 under the shorter set play, he threw far better and threw unbelievable darts for the time. The reintroduction of legs started around the same time as the WDC (now PDC) was formed. Of course you had the British Matchplay in this period but in terms of the size of this tournament it can be compared to the world Matchplay to an extent
Thanks. Interesting comparison with the World Matchplay in terms of prestige.

It's surprisingly rare across the history of the game to find tv tournaments that last longer than a few days.

Probably because you only had 3 channels (4 from 1982), they simply couldnt devote large amounts of time to a pub game. Add to that many TV channels didnt even operate throughout the day back then either, and had to dedicate a lot of time in daytime in the week to schools programming in the hours they were allowed to be on air.

Its odd seeing the videos on YouTube of the local ITV contractors (Granada, Yorkshire etc...) coming on air at half past nine in the morning ffs! No breakfast telly in those days.

To be pedantic, Alba is a BBC Gaelic language channel, the Scottish ITV contractors are/were STV, Grampian and Border.....
