Your rather alarming darts opinions that we're worried you're serious about

Post by Rogg » Sun Apr 26, 2020 9:25 pm

I still suspect that Walton would have taken Taylor around the turn of the century. It bugs me tbh.

John Boy was a proper player at the time with no obvious flaw in his game and the BDO field he came through was far stronger than the PDC back then.

Martin Adams was a better player than Adrian Lewis in the early 2010s.

Had the Grand Slam been a proper 50/50 between the codes rather than just another PDC tournament with a few BDO players thrown in to make it interesting, the BDO would have won half of them.

Great player was Wolfie. Three world titles and had he switched around 2000 he'd have won more than that in plastic ones.

Taylor's world titles between 1995 and 2006. Really? Who did he even beat?

Ted Hankey would have beaten Taylor in 2000.

Two time world champion Dennis Priestley, three time world champion John Part, Las Vegas Desert Classic champion Peter Manley, two time World Matchplay champion Rod Harrington, Players Championship winner Kevin Painter and World Masters winner Mark Dudbridge.

It's arguably no worse than the list of BDO finalists over the same period. Yes, a class player (Barney) and a few good players (Burnett, Hankey, Adams, King) lost world finals, but some random no hopers like Marshall James and Ritchie George also made BDO finals over that period.

All the players Taylor beat in world finals between 1995 and 2006 were major winners. The same could not be said for all BDO world championship finalists over the same period.

Most of Taylor's mid to late 90s finals were against Priestley who was as good as anyone in the BDO at that time. A couple of his early 2000s finals were against Part who would have been a match for any BDO player except Barney in that period. Of course, it would have been better if Taylor had played more of his mid 2000s finals against Barney and less against Manley, Painter and Dudbridge, but in a relatively evenly matched post split darts world, utopia is unrealistic.

If Mike Gregory had beaten Taylor he would have gone on to win many more titles and nobody would remember Taylor now
