2020 Grand Slam of Darts --- Ricoh Arena, 16-24 November

Worth a thread as it's one of the fattest topics every year.

Hearn chatting Slam on the weekly dartscast. He appears at 47:30. GSoD from 54:30.

You won't like what he says about the floor qualifiers, however.

I just cant understand his thinking. Snooker has bags of ranking events with no qualifiers. It even has one that has only 8 players and has one of the biggest top prizes of the year. Why the fuck is his thinking so utterly backwards between snooker and darts.
Boring Brendas number one and (almost) only fan.

Smithys number one and (definitely not) only hater.

Basically that he regards the 8 floor spots as a minimum number. Definitely here to stay.

If he is sacking off the bdo 8 they have to come from somewhere I guess

Yet he also gives invitational tour cards to the likes of Jimmy White. Puzzling how his strategy in darts and snooker can be so different...

Make it set play, double in or 1001 or something if they’re sacking off the only thing that makes it different/interesting.

Let's me guess he is putting a Fallon Sherrock Floor qualifier in

The criteria is anyone called Fallon Sherrock can enter it

I wouldn't mind set play after group stages

I like the World's being the only big set play event.

I actually think it's strange that the Worlds is the only time they play straight start Set play all year.

It makes it even more unique, I think it would lose a little something if it became just a longer format version of another event. Same arguement in golf people always wanting more Matchplay golf but I think a large part of why people enjoy it so much is that you rarely get it.

They named the World Matchplay Darts because everything else at the time was Set Play.

Now they have gone the complete opposite direction, the World's is the Unique tournament.

I just get sick of every other tournament being so similar, would love more Set Play during the year.

Other than a NotW style format with all 128 tour card holders, maybe they could have a World Masters style 2 leg set format? Not particularly a fan of it myself, but it's something different, but without making the Worlds format any less unique

Not exactly a shock given the BDO is unlikely to exist come the business end of this year. Fuck the 8 floor qualifiers, up until last year's gruesome BDO fare, they were the worst thing about the tournament. It ain't hard, just invite some of the international tour leaders.

Disappointed with his remarks re Q-School and the Challenge Tour as well, I'd hardly call the Challenge Tour the 'back door' given it's basically the same players, except over 24 events and not 4. Offer 4 cards to the Challenge Tour, maybe one each to the leaders of the various tours around the world, and we'll be spared Terry Temple stinking his way through the tour

Totally agree with this. More set play would be great, especially as the itv ones at the end of the year are so similar.

The ones at the back end of the year are undistinguishable from each other
