Still, Lewis has more experience on the big stage. I wouldn't be surprised if Lewis turns up and wins.
I expect it to go the way of most Duzza games against decent opposition where he'll start off like a train on fire hammering Lewis in some legs, lose some tight ones, and let it all get to him on the way to a 10-8 defeat. Will average more than Lewis tho

Mind you, it could also feature Wright vs Whitlock.
Gando-Asp could be really interesting. Gando didn't look good in Vegas, now that could be because he couldn't be fucked, or it could be that he's still not 'match-fit', in which case the cat is well and truly in the open. Smith not 100% too, although Yozza is obviously one of the form players of the ProTour lads

Top half should be a good watch, the bottom half could be rather horrific unless Dobey smashes up Creepy

Just the two unseeded players getting past the first round last year, we'll surely see more than that this time around. 7 in Taylor's Blackpool swansong in 2017, 6 the previous two years; I don't think we'll see that many, but those figures will be challenged I'm sure

6-7 unseeded players going through sounds about right I think.

I think Lewis in 2011 when he won the worlds would beat Durrant now not a chance. I think his ferry trip campaigns to deepest darkest Holland have finally taken there toll!

Won't be happy if I was a Lewis fan with facing Duzza first and the have to play most probably vs MvG in the following round should he send Durrant home.

On the positive side we have good matches all around the board.

Dangerous tie for Cross imo vs Chris Dobey.

On the other hand Gary can beat Noppert but an in form Aspinall in the second round could mean that we would be in for a very interesting test for the Flying Scotsman's title defense....

Has anyone ever had a worse draw than Lewis has for this tournament? If Duzza and MVG aren't bad enough, he'd probably face Wade in the 3rd round and then possibly Anderson or Asp in the semi-final.

Obviously, Duzza has to run the same gauntlet. I can't see him making the final.

Oh the woes of being a 16th seed. The ways he's been played he was lucky to be seeded!

Looking at the draw, the two days i'm going to Blackpool are utterly contrasting in quality.

On the one hand the 23rd has the prospect of 3 great matches in Smith/Hughes v Chizz, GAndo v Asp and the plastic champ vs the real world champ.

On the other the 22nd..... holy fuck that couldn't be less appealing for me seed wise. Just got to hope that Hendo VVdV or Evans can do somthing special.
Boring Brendas number one and (almost) only fan.

Smithys number one and (definitely not) only hater.

Jeffrey de Zwaan can testify to that, sometimes it's best to play the top players earlier while the format is still shortish

Good point, an upset by an unseeded player over the top 4 puts them in a good spot. How many defeats has a top 4 had in the match play? And how far did those unseeded players go? My recollection on this is shit. Zeyes or PT13? Or anyone look back at history. I remember Little dictator Benito getting to the qrtrs and I think he was unseeded, but not sure.

Just had a look, van de Pas lost in the first round all 3 times he's been at the Matchplay. '15, '16 and '17. Made the Grand Prix quarters though in '16 and '17.

In the last 10 Matchplays, these are the defeats I found of Top 4 seeds in the first round and how far the non-seed went.

4th seed Part to van der Voort in '09, made QFs
4th seed King to Klaasen in '10, made QFs
4th seed Anderson to Hamilton in '11, made SFs
4th seed Anderson to Winstanley in '12, made L16
1st seed van Gerwen to De Zwann in '18, made SFs

Anderson has also been knocked out by a non-seed in the second round twice, by Suljovic in '15 as 3rd seed, and Gurney in '17 as 2nd seed. Suljovic lost next round, whilst Gurney made the semis.

van de Pas is really struggling now, so the 1st round exits are not to surprising, it proves 1 bad year is just blip 2+ years and you are in serious jeopardy. For a young man this is worrying times!
