Thornton, who was the other one?
Not Thornton. Wade in '11 and Taylor in '13.
Really?

It was based on qualifiers though, the others who started from the latest rounds actually got there on merit so fair enough

Yeah. If this year's 6 PCs had been used for a qualification table like the UK Open qualifiers before, Aspinall would have been seeded into the last 64, too. I wonder if the PDC's gonna reconsider using the main OOM here.

Think I liked the previous qualifying system better. It could well be qualifiers instead of those PC's, it adds that bit of extra spice to those events. Allow maybe the top 64 from Q-School or something like that to enter them. Now that the amateur qualifiers have been cut to 16, at least I'd prefer most of those players to be real unknown names. At the same time the current system gives value to the CT which is much needed, so it's a tough call.

Asp is a legend, and that 170 out to win the competition is just fantastic.

The drama of the Cross-Smith match had done Cross in, he looked like he just wanted it over about half way through the match. Asp had the stamina which is vital at the UK Open. It says a lot that Taylor only won it 5 times.
Exactly because it's a fucker to win for sure, awesome tournament though, easily one of my favourites every year!

Somehow they manage to keep coming up with solidly awful finals.

8 different winners in the last 9 years. 10 in total. Van Gerwen is such a jobber.

2003 - Phil Taylor def Shayne Burgess 18-8
2004 - Roland Scholten def John Part 11-6
2005 - Phil Taylor def Mark Walsh 13-7
2006 - Raymond van Barneveld def Barrie Bates 13-7
2007 - Raymond van Barneveld def Vincent van der Voort 16-8
2008 - James Wade def Gary Mawson 11-7
2009 - Phil Taylor def Colin Osborne 11-6
2010 - Phil Taylor def Gary Anderson 11-5
2011 - James Wade def Wes Newton 11-8
2012 - Robert Thornton def Phil Taylor 11-5
2013 - Phil Taylor def Andy Hamilton 11-4
2014 - Adrian Lewis def Terry Jenkins 11-1
2015 - Michael van Gerwen def Peter Wright 11-5
2016 - Michael van Gerwen def Peter Wright 11-4
2017 - Peter Wright def Gerwyn Price 11-6
2018 - Gary Anderson def Corey Cadby 11-7
2019 - Nathan Aspinall def Rob Cross 11-5

He is now above crusty, Mensur, cross and chizzy..
Amazing what has happened to him in just two months

More often than not the finals of these weekend events end up being shite. Think its hard for the players to get back up for the final when it's straight after the semi. Fair play to Aspinall though, great win for him

Cross definitely looked shattered. He wasn't going to say it was especially the case because he played the 2nd semi, but I suspected it may have been that.

Though looking back at past UK Open finals, there were some brilliant performances as well. You barely see MVG throwing much worse in a final than he has before. Probably a matter of getting used to it. Cross has only been in this situation a few times (only once on TV), and it was a first for Asp.

Anyone else of the opinion that the open draw makes for a more interesting tournament ?

Personally, I would like to see it in other tournaments too.

Well done to the Asp, fantastic for him and darts in general.

It definitely adds a lot of thrill to it. I think the UK Open is one of the best events but I'd like it to be unique and stay that way.

Fair shout fella, I guess those at the top end of the rankings would be up in arms if it was rolled out across every tournament but I reckon there is scope for more than one :D

Yeah, I don't mind all 128 tour card holders qualifying automatically, but you get some right jobbers getting an advantage over some good players (especially those who have just won a tour card) using the OoM. I'd like there to be a compromise where PC1-6 count double, for UK Open qualifying as well as the Players Championship. It would mean that they become disproportionately important, but when you consider that good Challenge Tour players' PDC season might be over until PC15 because of one poor weekend then it's not exactly unprecedented

With the snooker Shoot-Out recently happening in the hallowed Watford Colosseum arena the other day there were a lot of calls from fans to implement something along those lines in darts, I'd scrap the Masters in its current format and replace it with a NOTW style open draw tournament for all 128 tour card holders, would be interesting to say the least!

Agree totally.. I was thinking about this last night, and the fact that it is unique, is what makes it such a great event.
A great weekend of darts, and the early exit of MvG, Gando and Crusty certainly opened it up
