Barney has stated on Dutch TV that he aims to play on the floor/play the full tour for his final year, with his goal being to qualify for the World Matchplay (etc.) and in the end qualify for the 2020 World's.

Same old talk of course, except this time he does really need to play on the floor to achieve his goals. Wonder where that'll end up.

At least the new structure for the European Tour qualifying means he doesn't need to travel extra for those anymore, rather just need to show up to the PC weekends. Whether he'll actually qualify for any is still a different matter, of course.

Good point.. the harsh reality in all of this, is that if Barney plays like he has for the past couple of years, he won't get in these majors, as I don't think he is good enough or consistent enough to beat the guys he will be up against..
If the season starts badly for him, and he fails to qualify for a few tournaments, I can see the same old head shaking Barney emerging and he won't be up for the fight..

I think if Barney is motivated, he will achieve most of what he wants. He's that good. He's got to get rid of the negativity, and get seriously motivated 2006-2007 style again, this time aiming to do the very best he can in his last year. One last year of going for it. Aim at getting into the top 16 of the Pro Tour Order of Merit to get into the 2019 World Matchplay, and then aim at the 2020 World Championship.

I know it's become a running joke that he's spent recent years talking about doing the tour, and then he doesn't do it, but he was a top 16 player then and had options to skip the tour if he could keep delivering World Championship semis and quarters every year. I don't see how he has any choice now after those calamitous first and fifth sets in losing against Labanauskas, if he wants the 2020 World Championship farewell, that is. That defeat to Labanauskas has seen his ranking go to the bottom section of the top 32 and he will go out of the top 32 completely way before the 2020 World Championship if he doesn't do well on the 2019 tour.

And Rod Harrington the pundit, although he annoys some people in stating his points so often, he's accurate. Exhibitions do not sharpen you up. To be consistently sharp for competitive darts, Barney needs to do the tour.

I don't think he has enough time to put right what he's done wrong to be honest. His throw is absolutely awful compared to even a year or so ago, just slaps them in like he used to when a leg/match was already gone, only permanently.

He might be able to scrape into a few TV events if he goes all in but I honestly don't think he's got any of the old Barney left in him.

I don't fancy he'll managed the grind of the floor now, but, if he can safely negotiate a few rounds of Euro Tour qualifiers, he might do alright there given that it's just a game per day until the Sunday. He's incapable of any kind of consistency now, he simply can't endure long games or play back to back like he used to, but he's still a very good player on his day, I think he'll scrape his way into the top 32, then give one of the top seeds a game at the next Worlds before bowing out with at least some degree of pride
