Then he's only thirty with many years ahead and every chance of being the greatest player ever
14 world titles and 15 world matchplays to go......
MvG could never get close to Phil on world's and matchplay titles and he certainly wont have the longevity that Phil had.
He is, however, capable of brilliance that maybe Phil couldn't match..
He is certainly capable of breaking all the records regarding averages and scoring, unbeaten runs etc
It depends on how long he has the hunger for it...
Great players bounce back when they lose form and this is currently his biggest recent dip in form..
He is still miles ahead in tournament wins this year, when you consider how many he has missed too, but the fact that he only holds one major should be motivation for him to get them back.
This year has been quite strange when you look at the players who have won titles but the majors are what the top payers get judged on so the next three months are crucial for MvG

Serious danger in serious depth. Somebody will get you eventually and it won't be the guy who got you the previous time.

'Consistency' is the separate issue. It's not really the nature of the game, is it? Phil Taylor is the greatest you'll ever see because he conquered it at the highest level for ages, a freak.

I think becoming a father for the first time has affected him.

Could it be that darts is no longer the top priority?
2020 World Grand Prix Lucky Dip winner!
2x 2019 Q-School Lucky Dip winner!

Both as valuable as the Lakeside piss pot!

He just seems very nervous under pressure.
Not sure you can attribute that to his family.
We have seen him going for more and more outlandish out shots to seemingly keep him interested.
Maybe he is bored.

I think you may be right. He has said before he goes for the outlandish shots to try and get himself going when he switches off.. he is obviously aware of the concentration lapses so it is definitely a mental issue he needs to sort out..
Yet the stats show that on the tour he has a ridiculously high percentage of winning last leg deciders but he seems to feel the pressure more in the majors. More at stake to lose I suppose. If he could sort out the loss of concentration he would be unplayable on more occasions than not

Hard to pin point when it became an issue.
Certainly as Taylor came to the end of his career mvg seemed very unnerved playing him.
For obvious reason.

At one point he would just chuck them to finish, now he pauses. His treble 20's are not as quality either
