New paper book out Wednesday 25 Years of the PDC World Darts Championship, from the write up seams a good buy and nice Christmas present for the darts fan as all he results and player details of every match and performer over that time. Sounds like a good buy, not read any reviews on the book yet. The author) is Steve Morgan with an Introduction by Barry Hearn.

The Top 5 PDC World Championship finals, apparently.

Admittedly hard to cut it down to exactly 5 but no mention of 2004... https://www.pdc.tv/news/2018/12/09/top- ... hip-finals

What a photo this is, 2009. Feel sick now.

The best 5, in chronological order:

1996
Taylor comes back from 0-1 and 1-2 down, takes a 4-2 lead, Priestley narrowly missed a 132 finish to make it 4 sets all. Taylor won 6-4 on double 15, despite having a 3-dart average that was consistently below Priestley's throughout the match.

1997
Priestley makes a brilliant start, leading 2-0, with Taylor looking in trouble. Taylor then played amazing darts, winning 14 of the next 16 legs, despite Priestley averaging mid to high 90s throughout that period. Priestley, undeterred, got it back to 3-4, and reminiscent of a year earlier narrowly missed a 3 figure outshot for 4 sets all. Taylor instead made it 5-3, and then won 6-3.

2003
Taylor went into this match having won 44 matches in a row at the World Championship and 8 World Championships in a row (10 in all), last losing in the 1994 final against Priestley. Taylor had also not lost on TV since October 2001, and his previous TV loss before that was at the 1999 World Matchplay. Part went ahead 3-0 and 4-1 in the final, stunning Taylor and everyone else. Taylor then fought back, winning 11 straight legs and led 5-4. Just when you think Taylor has got him, Part responds and wins 7-6.

2004
An absolute epic. Taylor hated being ex-world champion after his loss to Part the year before, and was determined to be reigning world champion again. Painter was excellent in the first 4-5 sets, leading 2-0 and 4-1. Taylor was in utter despair at 1-4 down backstage, having a mini-breakdown and shouting "I can't do this anymore. I can't take the pressure". Eddie Cox then said dryly "I don't hear any fat ladies singing, kidda". That set Taylor's mind right. He came out fighting, reducing the gap to 3-4, but failed to make it 4-4 as Painter took a 5-3 lead. Taylor went 6-5 up and seemed to have the momentum, but then Painter doggedly stuck in and fought for his life, getting it back to 6-6 and taking it all the way to sudden death. The trebles mostly eluded Painter in the sudden death leg, and Taylor won on double 5 with Painter waiting on a 3 figure shot in the 120ish range.

2007
Regarded by many as the greatest darts match of all time. Barney had come over to the PDC, determined to challenge Taylor and cement himself as the best darts player in the world. Barney had an up-and-down 2006, with some successes against Taylor, but Taylor was still the main man. Taylor's form in the 2007 World Championship was sensational, averaging about 102-103 for the tournament. Barney narrowly avoided elimination against Colin Lloyd in the Last 32, but was as dominant as Taylor after that in reaching the final. Taylor started the final well in control, winning the first 8 legs, and 9 of the first 10 legs to take a 3-0 sets lead. Taylor never blew any match from this sort of lead ever, did he? Barney starts playing out of his skin, chasing down Taylor's lead, and eventually overtook him at 6-5. Taylor had an annoyed look on his face, and came charging back to 6-6, and the final set went all the way to sudden death. Barney used Taylor's dart as a guide to win the throw in the sudden death leg, leading to a rule change soon after. Taylor seemed to have the momentum after hitting a 180 under the biggest pressure, but Barney looked much cooler in hitting a 180 in response. Barney won.

I don't see how any of the Ally Pally finals are up there with these Circus Tavern finals, at least drama wise.

2015 perhaps?

Only Ally Pally final that's gone the full 13 sets. Gary managing to win the opening leg of set 8 (I think) having had a 180 bounceout with the opening visit will always be in my memory.

Out of the PDC finals I have watched, 2003, 2004, 2007, and 2015 are the clear standouts. The two Lewis vs Gando finals were pretty good as well.

The Taylor vs Manley finals and the first Taylor vs Part final were duds. But at least you could marvel at Taylor's skill. The Part vs Shepherd was the absolute worst I have seen.

After three nights of first round matches you will be posting "too many nights like this lately" and "I am off to bed" :)

I think the tournament will take a good while to get going this year. It might be difficult viewing until the 3rd and 4th round or so. The first round will be very difficult viewing at times.

The quality will no doubt suffer a bit with the extra 24 players, and all playing longer formats as well. I guess if you're interested how many of the international guys do then it won't be that bad. But there are certainly a few games I won't watch in the first round but that's not really a problem, have to pick and choose sometimes.

Anyone having a bet on this?

I am having a few quid each way on Price and Ratajski. Price has the stamina, form and a decent draw. Ratajski has a decent chance of making the QFs if he can beat Wade in the second round. I also think Bully Smith has value. I would also say Lewis, but he has a bastard of a draw. He's scheduled to meet Barney in the 3rd round and MVG in the 4th round.

Price looks a good bet to win his Quarter at 7/2

My big bet for Rd 1 is Dekker and Joyce to both win the 180s. Pays about 6/4.

Luckily most of the lower ranked ProTour qualifiers have been drawn against some of the better international qualifiers, so hopefully we shouldn't see too many games where both players plod along with averages in the 70s or low 80s

I think they've scheduled it pretty well, there aren't too many shit looking sessions. I quite like the early rounds anyway, even if it can be sub standard, it's nice to see new players. Sometimes I zone out a bit in the last 32, but by the last 16 it gets proper serious

Had Wade at 100-1 at start of year. Had Ratajski each way 300-1 before the draw, hoping he'd fall in bottom half. This week I've had Michael Smith to win it 16-1 and Nathan Aspinall to win his quarter at 80-1. Toyed with Price or Suljovic from bottom half. Can't see Krusty or Cross in final, but Krusty has such a kind draw

Those are decent wagers to start off with.

I really can't see Cross or Krusty getting to the final. Smith and Price are the favourites in that half of the draw. With Mensur just behind.

Should we start another suicide watch thread in case Anderson goes out in the first round?

Beppe will be on the verge.
