This describes not only the political assassination of the old ruler, but for how it has had the opposite effect to what the assassins intended and only accelerated the BDO's decline. Had Croft stayed in charge, the BDO would obviously still be in decline, but they would be in a lot better shape today than what they are. Croft was giving the BDO a managed decline, not an utterly chaotic one.

I'm not convinced of that. Sure, Croft knew how to hold on against a PDC that was mainly focussed on being a successful top 32 players TV event company. But then the PDC's massive encroachment on the BDO's footprint in darts via Youth Tour, Challenge Tour, big-money Pro Tour etc. began after Croft was gone. I think it's giving him too much credit to just assume that he would have handled it any better than the subsequent BDO boards have done.

When this is viewed as better than the current board it shows the depths they have sunk too.

De:Luxe definitely hastened the demise but Auntie Sue and Uncle Wayne were so desperate they'd have sold out to anyone.

Was so enjoyable digging down with Bradders exposing this for what it was. Auntie Sue paying a solicitor to write a letter telling her not to do a meeting was fantastic. Even though some elsewhere still believe it didn't happen.

Auntie Sue even sent out letters with subtle changes to find out who was leaking. Good job we were aware and didn't publish them

Croft avoiding something like the Deluxe mess doesn't mean he'd have avoided other dumb decisions. For instance, I can perfectly well imagine him alienating lots of players through another round of banning threats of some type, once the Challenge Tour kicked into gear.

i suspect he wouldnt have wanted to but the pressure from players would have been hard to face down.
