It's very sad but anyone who remembers Jimmy can see the parallels with Wright, to think way back in the early 80s is someone had said to me that Jimmy White would never be World Champion I'd have said they needed locking up, Wright will win a few but like you say, he's destined not to be a regular winner and I'd be shocked if he won the World title, always seems to be someone else's turn or he bottles it, not to say he can't win it on his ability he just doesn't appear to be able to actually pull it off, I hope I'm wrong though!Wolflanternbumbag wrote:Peter Wright will be the Jimmy White of darts by the time he hangs his flights up..

Re: 2017 Grand Sham of Darts
Oh yes, that year, it wasn't so much the result for me but the score and the way it went down was staggering, Barney was comfortably beaten, genuine legend comfortably beaten on the biggest stage of them all by a solid pro. Wouldn't normally happen, surely everyone would have thought Barney would have lost an epic if he was to lose to RichardsonPT13 wrote:Rather strange, when he's been a semi finalist for 3 years running, and has beaten van Gerwen, Taylor and Lewis x2 in those years, despite them also beating him in the same period. Barney has only had one disastrous PDC World Championship, in 2012, when he was beaten by James Richardson 3-0 in the first round.Wolflanternbumbag wrote:Barney not listed in those World Championship odds then..

The loss to mvg came down to the two missed at d16 to hold throw at 11-11,it's fine margins, but he always fluffs his lines when the key moment arrives.phil the great wrote:It's very sad but anyone who remembers Jimmy can see the parallels with Wright, to think way back in the early 80s is someone had said to me that Jimmy White would never be World Champion I'd have said they needed locking up, Wright will win a few but like you say, he's destined not to be a regular winner and I'd be shocked if he won the World title, always seems to be someone else's turn or he bottles it, not to say he can't win it on his ability he just doesn't appear to be able to actually pull it off, I hope I'm wrong though!Wolflanternbumbag wrote:Peter Wright will be the Jimmy White of darts by the time he hangs his flights up..
He should have won the PL, mvg was very beatable Sunday.
He is never going to beat him at a real major where it's one game a day.

Pretty funny if you heard Mason's comments on Cadby at the World Series Finals. Before, during and after his match with Gerwyn.Jobber wrote:Taylor has tried everything on and off the board to pocket MvG and it's just not worked. Surely a first for him?! Even his old enemy Mace is noshing him off on twitter.
I'm guessing that Mason has some current interest in Taylor not refusing to be in the same room as him.

Re: 2017 Grand Sham of Darts
Regarding the pundits I don't get it, how come they are now slating Phil left and right for his actions and all lumping in, when back in the day they made excuses, it's almost as if "he's out of the door now so let's blast him". What should be said is Phil has been the most important player in darts raising the bar, the professionalism, the money, the exposure and the appeal of darts (for his gain of course too). While his actions aren't right, none of the pundits give both sides of the coin it's all "Phil's a dick and he needs to grow up, act better, learn to move on" etc, which is really hypocritical and doesn't paint the pundits in a good light either, which is also a very sad end to Taylor's career, thankfully Taylor's behaviour, importance to the game and his success in tournaments aren't linked otherwise he'd be doing serious damage to his legacy as a player.
As a human being it would appear not many liked him, those that didn't hate him tolerated him, born winners are almost always desperately driven, anti social, rude people who seem to enjoy being at the top and keeping others down by any means necessary, it seems that's how it has to be to be a ruthless, prolonged winner. Taylor can't understand all the socialising, practicing together, going on phones/tablets/social media, the lack of gamesmanship of nearly all players now, the darts world has changed so much and he has at least inferred that he feels he doesn't belong culturally now. A lot of people respect Phil as a player, but they aren't keen on bowing down to him and showing respect and adoration to his face as if he's a darting God which Phil doesn't like and takes the perceived lack of respect personally, look at the water incident. Hopefully he can be less combative for the Worlds and just play although his interviews will certainly be worth watching

Purely regarding his comments about the players not being the position they are without him, he is absolutely spot on. Can't see how an argument can be made against it

I've always had that impression fellow dart players dislike Taylor and Mardle is the worse. Next year when he finally retires all the 'little' squabbles and misdermeaners that went on backstage will start to come out

Jimmy White won virtually every other major tournament in snooker, though. It was the World Championship that he became notorious for not winning, not majors in general. Most famously, White led 14-8 in a race to 18 against Stephen Hendry in the 1992 World Championship, only for Hendry to win the next 10 frames; and White was 17-17 against Hendry in the 1994 World Championship and was at the table with the balls in nice positions and White missed a black off the spot, leaving Hendry in to clean up.phil the great wrote:It's very sad but anyone who remembers Jimmy can see the parallels with Wright, to think way back in the early 80s is someone had said to me that Jimmy White would never be World Champion I'd have said they needed locking up, Wright will win a few but like you say, he's destined not to be a regular winner and I'd be shocked if he won the World title, always seems to be someone else's turn or he bottles it, not to say he can't win it on his ability he just doesn't appear to be able to actually pull it off, I hope I'm wrong though!Wolflanternbumbag wrote:Peter Wright will be the Jimmy White of darts by the time he hangs his flights up..
One of the biggest underachievers is Greg Norman in golf. He should have won about 10 majors and all 4 of the major tournaments. Instead, he won 2 British Opens as his only majors, and had a plethora of second place and play-off defeats, usually because of a poor last 18 holes on the final day.

I'm a big Snooker fan and can remember watching the 1992 final, I was 10 years old then and had been watching snooker for 3 or 4 years, I guess it was Karma because Jimmy wasn't really dedicated enough. He's possibly the only player ever who can claim to be a legend and never have won the World Championship.PT13 wrote:Jimmy White won virtually every other major tournament in snooker, though. Eddie Charlton is another snooker legend who never won the World Championship. The closest was when he led Ray Reardon 29-23 in the 1975 World Championship final, and lost 30-31.phil the great wrote:He's possibly the only player ever who can claim to be a legend and never have won the World Championship.

Having said that since World Matchplay 2016 final Taylor has played MvG 9 times and won 6 including thrashing him at least three times which is not bad for a man well past his peak against MvG who is probably in his prime right now.Jobber wrote:Thought that was a couple of cracking sessions of darts.

He'll need to leave the seething at home if he wants to progress at ally pally.
I still think prime Taylor v Prime MvG i would pick Taylor to win more than lose as since he has beaten MvG far more often in last 5 years that MvG did too Taylor between 2007- 2012 when roles were reversed.
