My only point is that people moan the PDC tour is expensive yet you have people like Hurrell visiting some of the most expensive countries in Europe, unless he is floating over there and then sleeping in shop doorways whilst he is over there its going to be costing him a fucking fortune, and looking at his results he is nowhere near covering his costs whatsoever.

Hurrell has a good sponsor. and is playing BDO for experience. Not many people make money out of darts

As far as I can tell, the typical BDO floor event and Q School ought to be attracting exactly the same crowd - a large bunch of (for the level) strong players who go there because of the rewards on offer (tour cards / prize money), plus even more players who go there mainly for the experience or to have a good time™ watching better players compete, plus a few deluded ones who should be part of the second group but fancy themselves part of the first.

If something like the Scottish Open is now less geared towards the first group than Q School is, then that mainly says that the rewards at the Scottish Open must be less attractive than those at Q School. If you went back 10 years and told BDO supporters of the day that a no-prize money tournament that simply awards access to the PDC tour would be more attractive to semi-pro players than one of the biggest events on the BDO calendar, they'd not only have considered you bonkers, they'd probably have said that it could never possibly happen.

How much did you spend around the Scottish Open last year? How many legs did you play over how many days? Did you think you could win it? Cuz there was probably somebody at the time calling you foolish, convinced that you were deluded, wasting your time and money. Maybe you were an informed, level-headed adult, having a great time doing something you love, and not foolish at all.

I spent quite a bit at the Scottish Open. And will do so again. However i will be at the welsh open too. The BDO tour is designed for people like me (Hopeless amateurs). Q School isn't for (Hopeless Amateurs) its for people who feel they are ready for the Pro tour level. Thats why i make the case that PDC is Semi Pro-Pro while BDO is Semi Pro- Amateur.

If i couldn't afford it i would not do it. but there will be plenty of socialising with people and drinking. And watching some games of a high standard.

Hi oche. There will be deluded players but you seem to assume that pure delusion or madness accounts for a big chunk of entrants, like there's no other possible reason why they might have entered. Judging by your tweet last year about Baz being "the winner", it's also like you think they are victims of some scam? It does all get a bit hysterical at times.

By its nature, Q-School cannot be the singular, very pure thing you say it is. It is an open event and like at any other open, players are free to use it in different ways, from top to bottom, from Noppert down to you. These ways include the opportunities you mention like tourism, socialising and just love of the game. You can guarantee that Q-School will be a mixture of players at various stages and ages with all kinds of motivations and targets. Its absolute openness is important and a kind of charm, in my opinion, and 4 days of darts in the company of some big names is a very attractive prospect.

You've said you spend a lot of money around darts - more than I ever would - and you're happy, realistic and responsible. You are not deluded, a fool, or a victim and you attend for a variety of reasons. You don't go there thinking you can win it and you don't need anyone jumping to conclusions, getting outraged on your behalf or calling you a buffoon for spending so much time and money when you lose horribly. You can apply this to pub level Q-School entrants too, is my point, rather than simply insisting that they are all absolutely insane.
