Lewis/MvG semi final where it went something like 17-15 and only took 50 minutes. Insane standard as well.
Big changes on the way ! We've heard it before but it's different this time !!!! , I believe Bdo gonna grow x

Re: Favourite World Matchplay matches
An obvious one that's been mentioned several times on here but the 1998 final. Harrington v Baxter. Something like the first 16 legs all went with throw before Baxter pulled away and had a dart for the match about 17-14. Harrington came back to win it in a tie-break via a tops-tops finish on 125 which was outrageous at the time. It was a cross-code match too which added to the drama.
The 99 final went to a tie-break too, where Manley missed the bull for a 9-darter. A final tie-break needed two years in a row, both won by Harr, and it's not happened again in the 16 editions since.

Two of the best whole sessions of darts ever witnessed, every match a classic, don't currently have the impetus to elaborate but if you remember them you'll know:

Lloyd beats Lewis
Part beats Taylor
2007 SF night:

His 10-3 debut defeat to Mark Walsh? An epic encounter, you simply had no idea who would win until Walshy battered the life out of him easily.Chizzyfan wrote:Chizzy.

Was that when they had a run of a few outstanding matches in quick succession? Give me that Adie Lewis please. The Ginge Reaper wrote:Lewis/MvG semi final where it went something like 17-15 and only took 50 minutes. Insane standard as well.

I fear you have become delusional. It’s the first round of the World Matchplay at The Winter Gardens, Blackpool. And Dave Chisnall has finally found some form. Unfortunately, he is 9-1 down against Watford’s Mark Walsh.

gets my vote, that was the first Matchplay I watched. Also enjoyed the final of that year as Wade beat Jenkins. But wouldn't rate that as a classic. I would say the 2013 final Lewis vs Taylor was of an excellent quality and a classic

Re: Favourite World Matchplay matches
There's so many. Here's a mere few:
Th World Matchplay finals between Phil Taylor and Alan Warriner in 1997 and 2000. Both had amazing standard.
The return of Dennis Priestley to form in 2005, against Phil Taylor. The match started rather flat, but became a gripping epic where Priestley rolled back the years. Taylor eventually won 15-13 in a tiebreak, after leading 12-10 and going behind 12-13. Priestley hit a 156 checkout to go 13-12 up. Priestley was so inspired by this performance that he had 3-4 years of excellent form afterwards. Also at this tournament, Part beating Taylor 16-11, Manley beating Mardle 16-14 after being 9-14 down, and then Manley coming from 9-14 down to lead Part 16-15 before Part won 18-16.
Back in 1994, there was a match between Jim Watkins and Keith Deller. It went into a tiebreak at 7-7, with Watkins eventually winning 18-16, with more than half of the match occurring within the tiebreak itself.
The 2002 final between Taylor and Part. Everyone was expecting Taylor to win without Part getting into double digits, as Taylor had beaten Part 7-0 in sets, 16-4 in legs and 6-0 in sets in their previous TV matches. Instead, Part was right on Taylor's back throughout and went ahead 16-15 in a race to 18. Taylor won 18-16, which remains the most legs lost by Taylor in a World Matchplay final.

Re: Favourite World Matchplay matches
this wade battering of mardle
this was when he hooked up with that bitch hells bells and almost fucked up his career
Wade went 6-0 with supreme darts and a 104 average, then 8-1 up with a 108 average
by the time he was 10-1 up he had hit 10 doubles out of 12 and averaging 110

Scholes v wade semi final 06 I think.
Still the best game I've seen.

After Barney and van Gerwen the third best overall Dutch player IMO.Darth Randall wrote:Scholten v wade semi final 06 I think.

Re: Favourite World Matchplay matches
Old Roland's constant bottlejobbing to Taylor was completely sickening though. Remember their 2005 Premier League semi-final... Scholten 11-7 up in a race to 13, missed stacks and STACKS of doubles to job 6 legs in a row to Taylor's D-game. Gutless.
Just checked the head-to-head. Taylor 25 wins, Scholten 0. 2 draws.

Re: Favourite World Matchplay matches
True Roland was slaughtered by Taylor just like the rest. However he switched very early, whereas Barney who stayed and collected a few more world titles. I think he didn't get the recognition he deserved. In those days few people were interested in the PDC and media coverage was mainly based around the BDO. He has become a jobber now but I like him as a pundit!

On many of the occasions taylor was just too good for him, his strength was always scoring not finishing.Rogg wrote:Old Roland's constant bottlejobbing to Taylor was completely sickening though. Check out the game I mentioned, wade won 19-17 in overtime as I recall.

Re: Favourite World Matchplay matches
I remember that night well. Wade beating Scholten was a fairly big upset, although Wade's outstanding talent had become evident during the week. He'd been something like 8/9 on doubles against Ovens in an earlier round and won easily. Wade was a non-seed that week and I think he'd only just turned pro.Darth Randall wrote:On many of the occasions taylor was just too good for him, his strength was always scoring not finishing.Rogg wrote:Old Roland's constant bottlejobbing to Taylor was completely sickening though. Hamilton played Taylor in the other semi, and announced himself similarly that week as a player we'd be seeing a lot more of.
