I remember people being rather shocked about it at the time. When asked for comment... A spokesman for the BDO said: “We employ a freelance journalist, who is unbiased, to write our match reports. We stand by the report.” They doubled down. Nice bunch of folks eh.

Dutch to stage new tournament

Holland have won the right to stage a major new darts tournament, to be named the World Trophy.

The event will be staged in Utrecht from 7-15 September and will feature the top 28 players on the British Darts Organisation (BDO) ranking list.

Four wild cards will also be awarded, allowing stars like Bobby George to be involved.

"We think this tournament will be good for darts, and it could lead to other countries staging big events," said promoter Ad Schoofs, who is also the manager of 1998 and 1999 Embassy champion Raymond Barneveld.

"I plan to talk to five different companies who could become the tournament sponsor, which would enable us to do more for the players.

"But the event will go ahead even if a sponsor cannot be arranged."

The prize fund for the tournament will be 164,000 euros for the men's event and 33,500 euros for the women's.

The BBC, who on Friday announced they would be covering the Embassy World Championship for three more years from 2003, have expressed an interest in televising the tournament.

This was that, September 2002: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2002_World_Darts_Trophy

The size of the thing, basically an entire Lakeside. Despite the final sentence in the article above, the BBC presumably didn't televise any of it.

Bump for the original Q-School.

Q School Entries Announced
https://www.pdc.tv/news/q-school-entries-announced
11th January, 2011

THE inaugural PDC ProTour Qualifying School will feature 119 players in Wigan from Thursday-Sunday.

The 2011 PDC ProTour has seen the introduction of a Tour Card system, with 103 players earning a Tour Card by rights following the completion of the Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship.

A total of 128 Tour Cards will be awarded to players wishing to compete full-time on the PDC ProTour this year, with four offered to the Lakeshite Championship semi-finalists and the remaining places coming from the four-day Qualifying School in Wigan.

Q School will be played across four days from Thursday January 13-Sunday January 16, with each day hosting an individual knockout event.

The 119 players competing in Q School include 55 existing PDPA members and 63 new players or players who have rejoined the PDPA, including John Ferrell and Lee Palfreyman.

Magnus Caris, Devon Petersen, Preston Ridd, Dietmar Burger and Michael Mansell all competed in the World Championship recently, while Hull youngster Reece Robinson competed in the Rileys Darts Zones UK Open last June.

Many other young players competed in the inaugural PDC Unicorn Under-21 World Championship in the autumn of 2010, including Shaun Griffiths, Chris Aubrey, Michael Bushby, Jon Smith and Adam Smith-Neale.

The field of entrants also includes 2010 Lakeshite Championship runner-up Dave Chisnall and previous Grand Slam of Darts qualifiers Brian Woods and John Henderson.

Lakeshite Champion Martin Adams and Martin Phillips have declined offers of a Tour Card, with Dean Winstanley and Jan Dekker having until Thursday to confirm whether they will accept their place.

Four players from the original top 96 - Chris Mason, Lionel Sams, David Fatum and Scott Burnett - declined their Tour Card and have been replaced by Par Riihonen, Dave Smith, Stuart Dutton and Scott Rand, who were the next players in the PDC Order of Merit.

Back then the PDC had decency to acknowledge amateur orgs. Would love to see them offer cards at least to the Lakeside winner again.

Lakeside semi finalists were: Duff, Tricole, Menzies, Veenstra

Menzies has a card already. The other 3 would be very good additions to the PDC tour I won't have anyone saying otherwise

Unfortunately not. Having played 10 events minimum was the requirement to be eligible I believe.

The first ever action at a Q-School. 2011, Day 1.
https://www.pdc.tv/news/qualifying-school-day-one

DAVE CHISNALL, Shaun Griffiths, Shane O'Connor and James Richardson were the first four players to win a PDC ProTour Card at Qualifying School on Thursday.

The first of four days in the PDC's inaugural Q School, held at Wigan's Robin Park Tennis Centre, saw 106 players competing for the first places on the PDC ProTour this year.

Chisnall, the 2010 Lakeside Championship runner-up, defeated Terry Temple 6-2 in his decisive game to secure a place on the PDC circuit, with a Tour Card entitling him entry to all events on the £1 million-plus PDC ProTour this year.

The 30-year-old from St Helens also defeated Steve Watts, Gary O'Donnell, Mark Jodrill and Gary Eastwood in an impressive showing.

"It feels good and I'm looking forward to a new start," said Chisnall. "I knew it would be hard but I was feeling good coming into this and played well."

Teenager Griffiths, a 19-year-old from Partington in Manchester who played in the PDC Unicorn Under-21 World Championship last November and also competed recently in the Lakeside Championship, was another to stand out.

He whitewashed Martyn Bevan and Jimmy Mann and also defeated Simon Stainton and Andy Pearce before picking up a 6-1 win against Mark Jones in his decisive game.

"I'm delighted," said Griffiths. "It's a great opportunity for me and I'm looking forward to the year.

"With the PDC's Youth Tour also being announced recently I'll be able to get lots of experience this year."

Irish youngster O'Connor, a 25-year-old who played at the 2009 Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship, defeated Manchester's Peter Hudson 6-4 in their decisive game.

He whitewashed Simon Jones and Geoff Whitworth in his opening two games and overcame Andy Brown and Paul Rowley 6-3 before seeing off Hudson.

Northamptonshire's James Richardson, a 37-year-old from Rushden, was the day's fourth qualifier as he defeated Northern Ireland's Michael Mansell 6-2.

Richardson also picked up wins over Tony Blundell, Jason Crawley, Jamie Atkins and Scott Marsh on the day, as he ensured himself a spot on the professional circuit.

South Africa's Devon Petersen, who competed recently in the World Championsihp, reached the last 16 before losing to Mark Jones.

The remaining players return for the second of four days in Q School on Friday, with a further four Tour Cards on offer plus Q School Ranking Points.
