MVG! What an amazing player. Second best player in the history of the sport. He has won 16 majors/big tv titles.
Take a look at his performance timeline (chapter 9)

Looking at that he's only started really dominating the TV events in the last 18 months which explains why he still has only one World title.darts1000 wrote:Take a look at his performance timeline (chapter 9)

How can people refuse he is the second best in the sport? I COULD even think he is the best player ever in darts. Although, he will never be the greatest ever.

Dave Chisnall is the greatest of all time. #ridiculousclaimsday. Although, that one will be true by the end of his career.

You could argue that MvG is already the second best player in PDC history.Dartsjournalist wrote:How can people refuse he is the second best in the sport? I COULD even think he is the best player ever in darts. Although, he will never be the greatest ever.
He is one PDC world title behind Part, Lewis and Anderson - some people will say that's the end of the debate right there - but he has probably won more major PDC titles than those three combined. Is that true? Someone add it up.
Part, Lewis, Anderson (and Barney) have never won the Matchplay or the Grand Prix - MvG has two of each, and two UK Opens (Barney has 2, Lewis 1; Part and Anderson none). Not forgetting Wade who has 2 Grands Prix, 2 UK Opens and 1 Matchplay but no world titles.

Well yes but to argue he is the second greatest player ever, in the history of all darts, is fucking moronic.Rogg wrote:You could argue that MvG is already the second best player in PDC history.Dartsjournalist wrote:How can people refuse he is the second best in the sport? If I were asked to sum up this thread in one sentence I very much doubt I could. Good work all involved and onward to the next event

People have short memories or no memories, get emotionally attached and make knee-jerk reactions. 2 years and 4 months since the 'great' Lewis won a TV title (ignoring the world series)... Barney, Wade and Thornton have all won one since Lewis last did.

One world title doesn't get him in the top five of all time.

Fuck me, just saw the van Gerwen checkout stat. Is this a record for a Matchplay final winner? 18/27. I thought his doubling would be his weakness last night, nope...

Would you put him above anyone who won two or three world titles?Cooking with Sanchez wrote:One world title doesn't get him in the top five of all time.

Difficult to do that imo. Even Part, whose second PDC title was pretty fortunate in that he beat a shite Shepherd in the final, beat Taylor in the final when in his prime. Not many others can say that.

Re: 2016 PDC World Matchplay Thread
Not to talk down Part's win at all - the 2003 final is my favourite match of all-time - but I wouldn't say Taylor was anywhere near his prime that particular week. His aura was in its prime though, no denying that.Cooking with Sanchez wrote:Difficult to do that imo. It's fair enough if people want to go almost purely by world titles, but I personally don't do that. Kirk Shepherd, Peter Wright, Andy Hamilton and Simon Whitlock have all been relatively close to being world champion. Had one of them pulled it off, I'd not be able to put any of them above Wade. Other big titles also count for a lot.
