PDC was a fixture on SKY by then, and had plans for the future (PL, etc). Several notable players had jump ship to the PDC. It was also commonly acknowledged that the PDC had the best player. It's not like the PDC was dying a death or in limbo.

Which isnt true. Taylor was thrashing his opponents with ease and was beginning to get bored. The turning point was Barney going to the PDC, If Barney did an Adams and stayed what would have happened
Taylor vs Barney helped the PDC's growth, but so did numerous other things; SKY's presentation, Sid's commentary, and Wayne Mardle. The Premier League debuted before Barney as well. The PDC's growth would have been slower without Barney; but I suspect that they would grown and clearly surpassed the BDO nevertheless. They had the right ideas .

The facts are that the PDC had a sizeable slice of the top-end of the game by 2004. Olly Croft's BDO was not the only game in town anymore.
Agreed. The PDC would eventually have surpassed the BDO. They would have done so with a much more professional run organisation, better TV deals, and a better talent pool, which would have continued to grow even if it weren't for Barney.

With Barney switching, the PDC got ahead of the BDO in 2007. Without him switching, they would have had to wait a few more years. No big deal. It was only the final nail in the coffin, very far from being the only reason.
Spread positivity and love. BDO4LIFE

PL was made for Barney has he had an easier opening into the PDC, Mardle didnt change anything. Sid was ironic and Sky's presentation is a far cry to today's standards. BDO wasnt the only show in town in 2004.

The biggest change aside from Barney came in November 2001. PDC Contracts beforehand you had a lot of the BDO in Matchplay & Grand Prix and PDC players in World Masters

Mardle, Sid and Manley were crowd favourites. They helped the PDC brand.

SKY's presentation was not as good back then as it is today, but it was moving with the times; something the BDO wasn't. Again, they had the right ideas and direction.

The viewing figure thing is a total misnomer, back in the 90s the BBC would have got over 2m people watching a blank screen at 6pm on a Saturday evening.
Big changes on the way ! We've heard it before but it's different this time !!!! , I believe Bdo gonna grow x

Nothing else to explain, back in 1994 the main four channels would have got millions no matter what shite they put on, cable/Sky was in its infancy.

James Bond films shown 5 years after they were made were getting 18m viewers ffs!

There like here TV was king of entertainment in the home. These days you have internet, streaming services, gaming, smart phones, etc all as direct competitors for viewers time. I know here broadcast TV numbers are falling steadily and have been for years.

Yup, the kind of U.S. primetime ratings that were getting shows cancelled in the middle of the first season 15 years ago are now good enough for programs to last years and years. The expectations for what constitutes a successful program have dropped massively.

Is the correct answer.
Channel five hadn't even started.

BDO were wise to hold on to the BBC deal. What they needed to do was expand elsewhere, and broaden their horizons. Instead, they got set in their ways from what I understand.

Take a snapshot of 2004 for a second. The PDC had just debuted their UK Open event the previous year; which was a name concept for the organisation. I can also imagine they were drawing up plans for the Premier League's debut in 2005. Another new concept, that was ideal for the casual sports fan.

Thinking about it, most of the momentum was with the PDC in retrospect, even before they got their mitts on Barney.

The momentum was arguably with the PDC ever since Hearn came on board in 2001. Might have been a multi-year process afterwards to put the organization on the right tracks for the future, but that's just the way it goes with the complexity of business at that level. The main difference between ~2004 and now is that the BDO was still in a strong enough position that they could have battled back. But they did pretty much none of the things that might have helped them in that quest.

The same process of the PDC growing and BDO declining, except at a slower rate. Barney moving massively quickened things up, and saw players like van Gerwen, Klaasen, van der Voort, King, Thornton, Stompe, M. Webster, Anderson and Whitlock switch in the next 3 years after Barney.

The BDO is the same organization whose intransigence forced the split. The WDC had tried everything to get Olly Croft on board with them between 1988-1993, and he had rebuffed everything. Why would the BDO suddenly become the best professional organization suddenly in 2004?

Barney would be a fifteen time Lakeside winner by now

Thats an interesting point.
Without Taylor to break him mentally he would not have become despondent.
That said he did manage to lose to hankey, Wallace, Fordham and klassen.

No he wouldnt be a 15 time Lakeside winner. He was never fully dominant in the BDO although was the best player.

I'd fancy him to have ten at least by now.
Who since 2007 was ever likely to beat him?

He owned Adams, he was as close to a dominant force the bdo has had.
You could make an argument for bunter based on the ally pally games but that was a different beast to a version not crushed by Taylor.

Lol at McGeeney on the list!

I doubt Barney would have the hunger to win Lakeside 10 or 15 times more like 6, 7 or 8.. If Anderson stayed he would of eventually won Lakeside
