Maybe he could have dragged Taylor down, we will never know.

For years they always called him 'Barneveld'. No van.

Even the Sky caption for the 2007 World Final just says Barneveld.

A surprisingly detailed BBC write-up. Still waiting for them to notice the 2017 Winmau...

He won the 1995 World Championship on his debut, defeating current PDC world champion Peter Wright on the way to lifting the title.
One of those sentences where we all know the facts but they still seem weird when stated so plainly.

I never heard the "van" before 1998. It was always the anglicized Raymond Barneveld before that, or Ray Barneveld. I think I first heard the van when Martin Fitzmaurice introduced him as that, and then the BBC started to use it more (although not exclusively). The van was much more prominent used by 2002-2003 time though.

What do you think changed around the late 90s then? Would you say that was a sort of transitional period for Barney's name?

His 1998 Embassy run and eventual win was very big news in the Netherlands. It made darts huge over there and even to a lesser extent elsewhere in mainland Europe. They obviously called him "Raymond van Barneveld". In the UK, we had only known him as "Raymond Barneveld". The van then started to be used more over time in the UK, until it eventually fully transitioned.
