It was never going to be easy for Bates to stay winning events what with having two wooden legs.

Hes one of them players that hasnt achieved what he cud in my opinion. He was never going to be a world champ, but 6 yrs ago he had the game to beat any of them on the tour, i wud put him alongside a Newton or caven of today, capable of great things once there wasnt a few steps up to the playing area!!

Certainly things may have been different had he won that UK Open final.
I guess his problems with his feet/legs or whatever is is didn't help and set him back.

I marked Bates' game against Burnett last year in Crawley, six doubles out of seven attempts was pretty awesome.

dont think bates s in the same class as newton.

Newton is really playing well the last 6 months...he is up to 8th i think in the OoM.

Bates is a good player and struggles at times, none more so than in the world cup last year when partnering webster

'06 was a yr he was playing aswell as anyone on the circuit Gaz. Newton for all his qualities has yet to reach a tv final, bates has.

Hard to compre them now, but Newton, like caven and a few more only seem to win when the big boys aint in town

Hmmm, depends what you call big boys, i'd put him in a tier just below Barney, Wade, Lewis and Gando.
(we are still talking about darts and not willy sizes right?)

i was speaking in terms of height in comparrison to sharky.

He might not have the natural ability of ando or barney but he is a dogged performer and lets be hionest barney is well known to drop the head and ando can certainly throw away a game.

Newton is an all round better player than king, and a far higher scorer, more dependable than baxter.
Wade and lewis are so erratic you could not write newton of against them either..

I believe the top 8 now will consist of the same players come the WC in 7 months time, with only webster or king likely to challenge and then if only they can get their act together

I'm not a particularly big fan of Newton's, find him boring to watch, but I do think his time on TV will come. I can easily see him advancing to that 'upper tier' Frog mentioned and taking a couple of majors at some point.

Hmmm i dont know, King has won the int league and Masters, Baxter Masters finalist and both have been World finalists.
Newton hasn't reached those peaks yet.

king is a steady and solid player but hardly dazzling, baxter is like jenkins in that he cannot cross the line in finals and think his time in finals is over.

I accept he might a bit on the dull side newton and not my favorite either but he has age on his side as well and should be around long enough after barney, taylor jenks etc have cleared off

Newton definately has the age factor in his favour.
Needs to get rid of the Warrior nickname though.

I still think King's capable of winning another major, too. Only thing working against him is his age in relation to the Taylor factor. By the time Phil finally fucks off, it may be too late for King.

He's won more than most has King. The world title is the one every wants and i think the oppotunity for that has past now unfortunately but i'd agree he still has the game to beat anyone, whether he can string enough wins together to win a major i dont know.

I dont rate king that much, not sure he is good enough to win any major let alone a world title...he is a tidy and solid player , checkouts out well but dont seem to be able to hit enough 100+ averages or get them purple patches in games like the other top tier players do

I think it would be fair to compare King with Adams. Steady but rarely spectacular
