The international qualifying for the Asian Championship finished today, Mitsuhiko Tatsunami as Japan's representative is the final direct qualifier. Remaining 26 places (or more if anyone withdraws) up for grabs on-site in a week and a half.

Tatsunami was already one win away from qualifying for the World Cup last year and two wins from the World Championship, so he's no mug at least by national standards.


Tournament entries not so great so far, earlier this week they announced 40 from (unnamed) international players as well as 64 from (named) Japanese. Travel/visa restrictions seemingly still making it difficult for the internationals, though the level of interest at home is fairly disappointing too. Then again, Q School used to get like 30% of its confirmed entries in the last week back when the PDPA actually bothered with regular updates, so I dunno, maybe there's more to come here. Deadline on Sunday. At least a 128+ field for the qualifiers would be nice.

Well, the guy who came through the Macau qualifier a few weeks ago has also won seven of nine tournaments on their local soft-tip tour this year, though I have no idea if that means he's good by Asian standards or if he's just the only halfway competent player who lives there.
