The Bob Potter Cup was a legitimate World Championship up until around 2010 imo. The BDO still had a decent share of the worlds elite players until the defections of the late 2000s.

After 2010, it was mickey mouse.

Agreed.

But I can’t stand the thought of Barney having 5 legitimate world titles.

The biggest defections to harm the BDO's standing later on:

2006: Raymond van Barneveld
2007: Michael van Gerwen, Mervyn King, Jelle Klaasen, Vincent van der Voort
2008: Co Stompe, Robert Thornton
2009: Mark Webster, Gary Anderson, Simon Whitlock

That basically ended the serious debate on whether the PDC or BDO were better, that had been going on since the split.

Thorntons defection was a huge blow at the time I seem to remember

Thornton had won the Masters title the year before.

Although iirc, Anderson's switch a year later was the biggest defection since Barney.

Yet Anderson did nothing of note in the worlds or masters prior to his defection.

Aye, but he was ranked number 1 in the BDO going into Lakeside 2009.

Anderson was clearly the BDO's most talented player after RVB left. He just needed to get over his TV-hump. Which he did after a few years in the PDC.

Aye, he won the IDL in 2007 as well.

Smashed Adi in the semi-final.

The semi final Taylor and Anderson played in wolves in 07 was very tense.
A lot was on that game

I wouldn’t disagree with any of that. It is surprising though that he never even so much as made a world final or masters final whilst in the BDO

Bigger doubles on the unicorn board helped him immensely when he switched.

Anderson was sensational in the 2007 International Darts League and World Darts Trophy. The biggest standouts were beating Wade 6-3 (best of 3 legs per set) in the quarter finals of the 2007 International Darts League (averages were 107 and 106), thrashing Lewis 9-1 in the semis, toe-to-toe final with Webster that Anderson won 13-9. And of course in the 2007 World Darts Trophy final, Anderson beat Taylor 7-3 (best of 5 legs per set), averages were 103 and 102.

He had no problems on TV in those tournaments. It was vintage Anderson. Anderson went on to reach the semi finals of the 2007 Grand Slam of Darts (the first one), where Taylor beat him 13-11 in legs. Remember the shock when Anderson then lost to Fabian Roosenbrand in the first round of 2008 Lakeside? Now that has to be one of the biggest upsets in darts history.

Anderson, fantastic. Whitlock of the BDO knocked Taylor out of one of the cross-code thingies too and he was brilliant.

Phillip was given quite a few fun interrogations by the BDO bastards and these were the times when the split bugged me. There were players out there who could make the PDC a lot more interesting. Your list up the page of the 2007-09 splitters was possibly the most exciting time I've known in darts.

The PDC were so excited at having 2 good Scottish players they invented the Jocky Wilson Cup.

That should be the World Cup format
