Always felt that scene was over-rated to an extent. My own highlights though are:

- The graffiti scene (maybe if you wrote it in fucking English, I could fucking understand it!)

- The opening scene in the car - the descent of Foster is well underway and the way the film communicates the sheer oppressive heat inside the vehicle (and indeed in the city during the whole film) is remarkable. One feel hot watching it.

- The manner in which Prendegast befriends Foster's mother and gets her talking.

- The soundtrack as Foster walks away from the gang shooting having stolen the bag of guns.

- Foster appearing from nowhere and smacking the irate driver in the face through the open car window.

- Foster's horror when he realises that the family think he is holding their young daughter hostage.

- Foster's affection to the family dog as he watches the home video in his wife's house.

- Foster's line, 'Am I the bad guy? How did that happen?'

- Foster's ultimate realisation that the best thing he can now offer is a life insurance payout to his daughter on his death.

- His look of final relief as he is shot and utters, 'I'd have got you' before dying.

This film is a work of art and most people only remember the scenes in the burger bar and Mr Lee's shop, the nazi guy and the golf course scene. There is so much more.

The burger scene a little cliche'd, the golf scene I did love as i fuckin detest golf cunts.
I actually could relate a bit to the nazi in certain ways as I knew many cunts like that, and no I aint a nazi.

The human side as you say how the aging duvall relates to his damaged mother, fosters love for his family etc albeit warped.
Its not an action movie, nor a comedy show but does have moments, its essentially a drama to me., a slice of life stuff.
