South America is crazy for football, apart from that volleyball and tennis are pretty popular.
Basketball too, that's one of the biggest sports around the world and real big in Europe as well. Handball is pretty unique to Europe and fairly big.
Is basketball big in Europe?
Never read anything about it
It's often held up as the reason west Indian cricket is so short of fast bowlers now.
Yep. Spain, Italy, Greece, Turkey, France are powerhouses, also very popular in the Balkans
Obviously I know of the riders but gets little or no maintenance coverage.
It is bizarre how sport is so fractured across the continents.

The one that surprises me a lot is India in terms of their success in football. Of course Cricket and hockey are their biggest sports, but people in India absolutely love watching football and it's definitely grown over there massively in recent years, but their national team have never come close to qualifying for a World Cup, not saying i expect them to do well on the international stage but Asia doesn't have a huge amount of depth at the top, you have Japan and South Korea who are banker qualifiers every year, as well as Australia who play in Asian qualifiers, but other than that it's not great and India haven't made leaps at all considering their population
China are the same, but maybe the domestic league being a big league over their now might see growth in the next decade, though they have qualified for World Cups in the past

Australia seems to have embraced everything although football seems to be at the bottom of the list and like America they seemed to want to set themselves apart with aussie rules
Hobo, what is the split in popularity/participation between the team sports in Australia?
Cricket
Rugby
Football
Aussie rules etc
And has there been a shift?
Cricket is popular everywhere in summer, although less so among 'Aussies' than when I was playing. Indian migrants are keeping a lots of clubs going in my area (Melbourne) assume Sydney and Brisbane are similar.
Both codes of Rugby are mainly played in NSW and QLD. The main winter code in all other states is Aussie Rules.
Rugby is traditionally mainly played by Private Schools and upper classes and League is for the working class and much more popular overall.
