Not sure how he expected to captain the team for 10 years. Which ten years are we talking about? He was washed up by 2005, and was far too young to cement a regular place in 95. Probably his best years were between 97 and 2004, by which time Ferdinand and Terry were both better than him.

So he wasn't even guaranteed a place in the team in his last few years as an international player. If the FA was racist, how come Ferdinand captained England 7 times, Ince captained them 7 times and Sol Campbell himself captained them 3 times! Lescott even wore the armband at one stage, as did David James and Emile Heskey!

Adams was a good captain when Campbell became a regular, so why the need to replace him? Shearer and Beckham did a decent job as captain, certainly England's fortunes improved when Beckham was appointed. From losing in round 1 of Euro 2000 to being a whisker away from the semi-finals in Euro 04 and WC 06.

I suppose the only one you would question is John Terry, because he's a loathsome individual. But the FA may not have known that at the time, and besides, Campbell wasn't a long term option in 2006.
