Interesting, had to look that one up as it was slightly before my time.

Nice little write-up of it on Cricinfo

As an aside, I wonder what your thoughts are of the difference between Viv's appeal there, and Stuart Broad's LBW appeals where he doesn't turn around?

I don't agree with Chappell on this one. A drawn series is enough to retain the Ashes, so it doesn't really make a difference. ENG were strong favorites before the series started, so they are the ones who should be disappointed.
Any time you don't win at home is a disappointment, but you must have missed us getting bowled out for 85 by Ireland lol

Barbados not Antigua then.
As comms said at the time viv got pretty much what he wanted when he wanted it.
Pretty sure bailey broke his toe in frustration in the dressing room and didn't play again.
Broad runs through yes but he is the bowler.
Richard's was at 1st slip.
I love viv but that was poor.
An england side standing up and fighting was more than he could take.

Point 1: No doubt Viv was under massive pressure as captain at 1-0 down, when they hadn't lost a series for a long time. I'm sure he would not be proud of that effort.
------------------------------------
Point 2: So Broad only attempts to con the umpire when he is bowling so that's OK?

Sure all bowlers appeal like crazy and put pressure on the umpire (Warne and McGrath in their prime were 2 of the best at that), but Broad is on another level.

It's one of the reasons the umpiring in this series was so poor, they are under so much pressure from the constant appealing. And with the way DRS goes, clear umpire errors don't get overturned due to 'umpires call'. See Wade's LBW in the first innings of the 5th test. That was missing leg all day long. Huge appeal, Dharmasena the guesser gives it out, and it stays out because a tiny part of the ball was clipping leg according to ball tracking.

If they can't get umpires who can handle the pressure, I think they need to do away with reviews and just have the 3 umpires controlling every decision. Could it really slow down play that much? On field Ump could decide if a decision is close, then chat to 3rd umpire who looks at replays and makes the final call. Have the most experienced umpire in the stands and away from the pressure. For LBWs, do away with umpires call and go back to the ball having to hit at least 1 stump full on. Clipping one stump or the bails is not out, to allow for some slight inaccuracy in the ball tracking.

Far too much weight in this series rested on 'umpire's call' when it seemed like every umpire's call was wrong in the first place.

Rant over.

I'm not saying broad doesn't behave like a cunt but vivs run from 1st slip to get the decision just struck me as a shit thing to do and still does.
Umpires are getting lazy with the review system and yes umpires call is a joke when they seemingly get everything wrong.

At least we can all agree Broad is a cunt.

By the way, reading that article reminded me of another thing that pisses me off about Test cricket these days.

Full rant to come soon.

Broad at least runs away from the umpire.
Viv ran towards him which just looks worse.
I look forward to the rant.
Lots about test cricket I object too now.

Just remembered I promised this and failed to deliver.

The basic point I was thinking about after the Ashes, and reading about West Indies series in 1990, was just how much more I used to enjoy Test Cricket when I was younger than I do now.

I first started watching Test Cricket in the mid - late 80s in Australia, and most summers it would be 1 team touring for the whole summer, playing some warm up games before a 5 test series that lasted the whole summer, with a One Day Series going on between the Tests.

Having the Test Series last the whole summer allowed for the touring team to settle in and play some proper warm-up games against the First Class teams.

The Ashes is basically the only time we get proper 5 Test Series these days, and there is just something so unsatisfying about a 5 Test Series that is over in 6 weeks.

I can see a time in the not too distant future where Australia and England are basically the only 2 countries that take Test Cricket seriously. Windies are already gone, Saffers will follow soon, India keep producing decent Test Cricketers for now but can see them going more and more for T20 in the future as that's where the money is.

I hope when/if that day comes, we can go back to having the Ashes stretch over the whole summer like it used to, with Tour matches and one dayers thrown back in, and maybe play only a few other shorter Test Series against the other countries.

Obviously the issue with this is T20 cricket, and I would love it if Australia and England would bring in a rule for their Test Teams that you cannot play any form of T20 cricket if you want to be picked. I'm thinking maybe you can't have played a T20 for a 12 month period before being picked for the Test team.

I much preferred 5 or even 6 test series as well but financial considerations around the t20 shit ruined that.
This summer it will get worse with the 100 shit

I'm not saying we'll ever get rid of T20. But I'd love Australian selectors to realise that just because you make runs there, doesn't mean you need to be in the Test Team.

England look to have picked a decent batting line up for today.

At least they have two openers and root gets some protection from the new ball at 4.
Not that it helped him last night
