The selectors were desperate to find a genuine all rounder as Botham was on his way out. Took until Freddie and he wasn't a patch on Beefy

Chris lewis, chris white, dermot Reeve even dominic cork was tried up the order.
The lack of a genuine all rounder sparked the craze for a wicketkeeper batsman
