We still have an impatient useless flid at number three, but I am sure Bairstow being moved up a single place will fix things.

Moving root up seems more obvious
I'd experiment with Hales at number three.
Playing three openers might be the way, try and shield the shot makers.
Seem to recall Atherton batted at three in his first test.
Let him go in with a one day mentality. Would probably still be more productive than Vince.

They need to blunt the new ball.
Stoneman has looked solid enough, cook has, another in than vain might help. Hales throwing the bat for a quick 40 odd achieves nothing.

Haseeb Hameed should be back near the line up as well.

You would love him.................he batted about 150 balls for 10 runs in one county game this season.

Who remembers tavare batting hours on end in Perth for 8?
Just checked, Atherton did debut at three, behind Curtis and moxon!

Strength in depth back then, I wonder how many South Africans we had in the line up ?

His first test he batted behind Gooch and Stephenson, neither of whom played in the sixth test where he batted behind Curtis and moxon, all three of them made ducks if I recall.
Smith played, he batted four, made 101 out of very little in the first knock, recall wisden saying Smith made another hundred on the burning deck.
Sure second innings of the sixth test, even with three openers, gower went in first and was bowled shouldering arms.. Stormed out of the press conference and his job.

Meanwhile Australia's new number 6 has a lower Test average than 7, 8 and 9.

Statistically the worst number 6 in Test history.

Perth is not what it was 20 years ago.

It might take us into the 3rd day to roll you.
First part of my prediction correct. Poms with a chance to post a big score.

Aussie batting ain't so hot, put under pressure of a big score I think they could fall apart just as easy.
