How do you beat Barcelona?

Post by D & B » Sun May 29, 2011 10:38 am

After last night I can sincerely say that is the best team I have ever seen play. Ferguson came up with no solutions to prevent the onslaught last night, over to you what is the solition?

Very technical, do you flood the midfield , try to copy their passing style or play the physical game? I feel that they have displayed the benchmark and other teams must try to adopt th same passing style to compete against the best team in Europe.

Arsenal try and play the Barca way and beat them, Real beat them in a cup final by closing them down. Isolated defeats granted but both prove Barca can be beat.
When you actually feel anger over a place like this it's time to get a life

Thats is true mate, I have only seen snippits of the games but still felt Barcelona were the better team in both games, I feel to really compete against Barcelona you must match their ball possession so that fatigue does not develop later on in the game or you can inflict tiredness on them.

Use the inter Milan 2010 blue print.

You need to press and force them into mistakes, strangely thats what Barca did to United last night, United got hardly any time on the ball and forced their players into making rash decisions ie long ball or fluffing a pass.

Possibly, brought Mourinho success but not a lot of acclaim.

I don't think a team can press for a whole 90 minutes(possibly 120), the importance must be in retaining the ball for long periods and make Barca players do as much chasing .

What's more important? I'd take success over acclaim.

So then you have to fill the midfield, and sacrifice forwards, limiting forward movement.

And Mourinho was lauded and now villified for it, Barca have shown us that it is possibe to do both so why can't other teams use their tactics against them.

He was vilified for what he did this year, but it wasn't the same set up.

Not sure he should have gone right up against them hell for leather, but he had the players to match them rather than kick them for sure.

You have to rattle them and press them in the middle of the park which is what man utd with their powderpuff midfield where totally unable to do last night

If you break up their pattern of play in midfield and do not allow them to dictate things and then get the likes of messi and villa with the ball with time and space 25-30 yards from your goal

Messis goal last night was an embarassment for man u they practically stood and watch whilst players exchanged short simple passes around
them 30 yards from their goal

You have to spoil them press them and then be brave enough to get enough players forward to test their defence

Liverpools teams in Europe under Benitez where very good at this - as evidenced by winning it in 2005 and making final in 2007 beating Barcelona in the Nou Camp along the way.

Barcelona enjoyed last night what Man U often enjoy in the premier league and that is a team standing off them and basically being too scared to play against them.

Fear cripples football teams and Utd showed loads of it last night.

To beat Barca you have to be strong, energetic, committed and not scared. Utd didnt tick any of those boxes last night. Hence the defeat and the one sided nature of it.

You stop the rhythm you reduce the threat. And then you can try and get at them

1 shot on target - no corners and 32% of the ball - unbelievable.

A midfield ball winner was essential last night as it will always be against Barca and Utd didnt have a genuinely top class one on the park.
