TDF Chess Thread

Post by Sprocket501 » Mon May 07, 2012 9:28 pm

Begins on 10th May:

Viswanathan Anand (India) v Boris Gelfand (Israel)

12 games initially - first to 6.5 points wins. In the event of a 6-6 tie, rapidplay tiebreaks will be played.

Might interest someone perhaps. Coverage will be all over the Net. If anyone wants to watch, I can direct.

Anand is the current champion after beating Veselin Topalov in 2010. Gelfand won the Candidates tournament last year to win the right to challenge.

Sadly, these days the matches are much shorter than they used to be - 12 games is nowhere near enough I feel but that is the way things are going now.

Winner will be champion for another two years before facing the winner of next year's Candidates tournament (in London!!!) in 2014.

Loved watching Kasparov in my younger days - compelling even though I had no idea about what he and his opponents were doing.

I can put updates and review videos of each game here as they happen. Gaz will love it, I'm sure.

I remember the days of Bobby Fischer during the cold war. Wasn't the opponent Spasky or something like that?

Fischer v Spassky

I've got all those games on my database and watched videos and read books on it.

Always regret not being old enough to appreciate that at the time. I recommend the latest biography of Fischer - 'Endgame' by Frank Brady.

Compelling read and you don't have to have an ounce of chess knowledge to appreciate it fully.

Little warm up for you - the so-called 'Game of the Century' played by Fischer aged 13 against Donald Byrne.

I taught myself how to play by reading the chess section of an encyclopedia at my local library when I was 10. None of my family played and forget school, it never happened. Played a couple of times in a pub 30 years back and managed to beat the guy who thought he was untouchable. He missed a simple move that you would have seen a mile off.

Fantastic game and I've said for years that cricket's chess on a pitch

Game 1 is on Friday at 1.30pm UK time.

All the main chess sites will be taking feeds from the board but I think the main webpage will also have commentary. I think Short himself is booked to do some of it.

Bill Hartson and the Mastergame on BBC2 was very popular at the time and as kids in my school, we loved it. I reckon any youngster who watched that at the time wondered how we could hear the players 'thinking'.

Loads of Mastergame episodes are on youTube.

personally, for me, this thread leans more towards an almost anything rather than an everything, but some say tomawtoe...

kidding aside, I may tune in Friday to check it out. are the walkon girls usually hot?

if Viswanathan Anand, playing black, were to gallop his horsie to f6 then flip a meat patty to g6,
clearing g7 to set down his medium soda,
would that be considered a Burger King Indian defense?

One year I got a bike for my birthday. So I went peddling off down the road and knocked an old lady down.
'Can't you ring your bell?' She said. 'I can ring my bell,' I said 'But I can't ride my bike'

first 40 moves each in two hours each

if that control is reached, each player is given another hour back and then another 15 mins eah after 60 moves.

This is drawn now. But Gelfand does have to solve the problem of his weak c-pawn.
