Tip for the “Yips”

I just figured something out and thought I would share in case it helps anyone else struggling with the same problem.

I’ve been shooting with a funky motion the past year and I think I found out a remedy. While practicing I noticed my head was shifting during my throw, which caused my arm and elbow to dip before every release! Yesterday, I made a conscious effort to keep my neck completely straight throughout the entire throw and my whole form has improved dramatically. I am now able to concentrate on the target better and have more control over my release now that my arm and shoulder are staying in a locked position.

If anyone is struggling and hasn’t tried this out, give it a shot and hopefully it will help you as much as it did for me!

Uncalled for, fellas.

Give the new guy a chance, he has the potential to be a great poster here.

Agreed.
Every beginning is difficult. Might turn into something decent over time.

Good advice, I'll try it.

Cured my dartitis by putting more weight on my back leg, stops me motioning forward. It feels a bit odd having a straight back leg and a bent front one but the darts are coming out nicely at the moment.

Suffered with this arsehole of a mental block for about 3/4 years now. I get the odd month where I'll throw freely and get back to some sort of standard and then one day it'll just come again. I got in the habit of using earphones whilst practicing, just so I have something else to focus on. It generally works until I take the earphones out.

Wouldn't say I have ever had The Yips but after I had tendon replacement surgery and a plate in my hand I struggled for ages with my throw, Tried all sorts but the one thing that did used to work for me was sitting on the floor and bouncing a tennis ball off the wall and catching it for about an hour before practicing, Another thing I used to do was to go fishing and get a bag of stones and throw them from one side of the river to the other.

I have had many chats about it with people over the years and one thing ive always said is that it is mental that you can struggle to release a dart but think of it another way...If you went to throw a brick through someones window....Your arm wouldn't stop and start and not allow you to release the brick...You made that mental decision to throw the brick in the first place and will do so.
