going for the early triple 17 in a 501 game
at the risk of talking about darts, I'd like to bring up something John Part said
on the air a couple tournaments back. It could be a simple nothing
or one of those percentage shots that happen in darts.
the scenerio is a 501 game. it's early in the game. let's say 1st turn, although
consider it possibly being the 2nd turn also as I'm not sure which round Part said it in
when he was commentating.
the player shoots at the 20's and then goes down for the t17 on his last dart.
now this where John Part said that that shot limits the course of action for the player
and that going for the trip 19 instead is the "better" choice.
the question is why would part believe that?

The most logical reason ( got my spock ears on here) is to go 19 instead of 17 for the simple reason, the more you take off the lower the checkout you will have when you get within distance
Never understood that idea of taking of the odd one early.
If you are good enough to hit treble 17 on a whim like that then why worry about finishes if you are that good in the first place.
for me going for certain numbers that early is over complicating things, just get up there and try better the treble 20 till you are in reach of a finish.

knowing part, I don't think it is as simple as the t19 (s19) erases more points than t17 (s17), Justin.
I have the feeling his reasoning will be like going after 303 with 3 darts in hand for example.
there is a right way and a wrong way, if you are playing percentages.

I agree that certain shots in terms of percentages work out.
Take merv king, if he has 3 darts at 80 he goes 16s first.
For me that is a mistake in choice yes treble 16 gives you 2 at your favorite double but so often he leaves a bull outshot.
Personally I think 20, 20, tops is a more reasonable checkout
For me guys like wade are the best when at scores of around 300 for leaving finishes and their counting immaculate, where guys like Taylor for all his brilliance is pretty shit counter.

yes. the merv king 80 out is a prime example if you are playing percentages.

Could be some logic to it but one assumes you would only do this if you need to go for cover after the first two darts, otherwise what is the point, you may as well stay on 20's?
If you go for T17 and miss and hit S17, you will then end up on xx4 (probably 444, 404 or 364 depending on how your first two darts went).
If you go for T19 and miss and hit S19, you will then end up on xx6 (probably 446, 406 or 366 depending on how your first two darts went
The second scenario means you are more like to end up on 166 if you then carry on hitting 20's or multiples thereof, which is a bogey. 164, however, is not.
So hitting a S17 early instead of S19 will leave you less likely to be on a bogey number later on. Of course, hitting the treble of either is much of a muchness.

Re: going for the early triple 17 in a 501 game
that's how it figures in my head also ginge,
except the s19 scenario leaves xx2 variables.
still a possible bogey though.
so going onto the next round, say both ways you hit a ton.
344, 304, 264
342, 302, 262
in the 3rd vist, the single bull option (a 105 score) has emerged for the 19's route on 262
vs the 17's route on 264.
a 105 is an easier hit than a triple. (140)
did the player just play the percentages by having to hit one less triple in his game?
Is this the "more options with the 19's than the 17's" that part was saying?
I wonder?
